Surface water‐groundwater connectivity in deltaic distributary channel networks [PDF]

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, 2015
AbstractDelta distributary channel networks increase river water contact with sediments and provide the final opportunity to process nutrients and other solutes before river water discharges to the ocean. In order to understand surface water‐groundwater interactions at the scale of the distributary channel network, we created three numerical deltas ...

Distributary channels in the fluvial to tidal transition zone

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Earth Surface, 2017
Coastal lowland plains under mixed fluvial‐tidal influence may form complex, composite channel networks, where distributaries blend the characteristics of mouth bar channels, avulsion channels, and tidal creeks. The Kapuas coastal plain exemplifies such a coastal plain, where several narrow distributaries branch off the Kapuas River at highly ...

Distributary Channel Networks as Moving Boundaries: Causes and Morphodynamic Effects

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Earth Surface, 2019
We propose an exploratory model to describe the morphodynamics of distributary channel network growth on river deltas. The interface between deep channels and the shallow, unchannelized delta front deposits is modeled as a moving boundary. Steady flow over the unchannelized delta front is friction dominated and modeled by Laplace's equation.
