Time-Expansion in Distributed Acoustic Sensing
26th Optoelectronics and Communications Conference, 2021We demonstrate a technique to achieve a customized temporal expansion of the time-domain trace in a phase-sensitive reflectometer, that allows the interrogation of fibers with high resolution (~2 cm) using only low-bandwidth photodetection (~MHz). © 2021 The Author(s)

SNR characterization in distributed acoustic sensing
SPIE Proceedings, 2016In this paper we study the SNR associated with acoustic detection in Rayleigh-based Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS) systems. The study is focused on phase sensitive DAS due to its superiority in terms of linearity and sensitivity. Since DAS is based on coherent interference of backscattered light from multiple scatterers it is prone to signal fading.

Distributed acoustic sensing of subsea wells
The Leading Edge, 2020Abstract Topside distributed acoustic sensing (DAS) of subsea wells requires advanced optical engineering solutions to compensate for reduced acoustic bandwidth, optical losses, and back reflections that are accumulated through umbilicals, multiple wet- and dry-mate optical connectors, splices, optical feedthrough systems, and ...

Nonlinear amplification in φ-OTDR for distributed acoustic sensing
European Workshop on Optical Fibre Sensors (EWOFS 2023), 2023A low-noise φ-OTDR sensor is developed by adding a 2-stage pre-amplification system mixing linear and nonlinear amplification in a 3x3 Michelson interferometric configuration. Its performance is evaluated by deploying it as a distributed acoustic sensing system in a survey well (sampling rate: 10 kHz), showing noise floor levels below 1 n?.

Source Detection and Tracking for Underwater Distributed Acoustic Sensing [PDF]
Distributed Optical Fiber Sensing (DOFS) transforms conventional fiber optic cables into an extensive network of continuous sensors. It achieves this by exploiting the spectral, polarization and/or phase sensitivity of the propagating light to measurands of temperature, strain, pressure, vibrations etc.

Distributed Acoustic Sensing for Geophysical Monitoring
Proceedings, 2012Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS), a rapidly evolving fiber-optic based technology for permanent in-well and geophysical monitoring, has been used to record VSP data in multiple Shell assets onshore Canada, USA, Europe, and the Middle East. Useful in-well velocity data were gathered from the entire length of the well from wellhead to TD (up to 4 km ...

How sensitive is distributed acoustic sensing?
Seventh European Workshop on Optical Fibre Sensors, 2019We present fundamental limits on the strain resolution of phase sensitive distributed acoustic sensing based on considerations of thermal noise. These limits suggest that, despite ongoing advances, distributed sensors are unlikely to approach the sensing performance of traditional geophones and hydrophones.

Distributed acoustic sensing: System and experiments
2017 Opto-Electronics and Communications Conference (OECC) and Photonics Global Conference (PGC), 2017This paper presents a fully distributed fiber acoustic sensing (DAS) system. Combined with the phase-sensitive optical time domain reflectrometry (Φ-OTDR) technology and phase generated carrier (PGC) demodulation technology, the system can detect and acquire seismic wave signal in real time.
