Distributed beamforming for Cognitive Radio
2014 4th International Conference on Wireless Communications, Vehicular Technology, Information Theory and Aerospace & Electronic Systems (VITAE), 2014The goal of the Distributed beamforming (DB) method is to collaboratively forward the Cognitive Radio (CR) signal to the Distant CR (DCR) user. We propose a novel Nodes Selection (NS) method which is based on the differences in beam width of a broadside array and an end-fire array. In this scheme the CR nodes which are able to form a full size end-fire

Cognitive factors in distributed design
Computers in Industry, 2002Engineering design is being carried out by distributed design teams in an effort to use expert human resources more efficiently. The support needs of distributed design are reviewed from a cognitive viewpoint using five broad categories: design methodology, collaboration, teamwork, knowledge management and design representation.

Distributed Cognition in Geriatric Telepsychiatry
2012 45th Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences, 2012We report on a geriatric telepsychiatry consultation service provided by a tertiary-care hospital to rural nursing homes located up to a few hours' drive away. Our case study analysis applies distributed cognition theory to highlight the interplay of social, structural, and temporal distribution of cognitive tasks associated with the telepsych service.

Our species has been a maker and user of tools for over two million years, but "cognitive technology" began with language. Cognition is thinking, and thinking has been "distributed" for at least the two hundred millennia that we have been using speech to interact and collaborate, allowing us to do collectively far more than any of us could have done ...

Distributed cognition in an airline cockpit
1996In earlier research on the organization of work, Hutchins developed a theory of distributed cognition that takes as its unit of analysis a culturally constituted functional group rather than an individual mind. This theory is concerned with how information is propagated through a system in the form of representational states of mediating structures ...

Distributed Cognition and the Will
2007Philosophers and behavioral scientists discuss what, if anything, of the traditional concept of individual conscious will can survive recent scientific discoveries that human decision-making is distributed across different brain processes and through the social environment.

Distributed Cognition in Flight Operations
2013Human Factors is no longer simply concerned with the design of equipment and work stations. This old view is being superseded by a systems-based approach which examines all aspects of the working environment and makes little or no attempt to separate the human, machine and task environment.

Theories of the extended mind or extended cognition have been among the most widely reflected and studied concepts in philosophy since the late 1990s. In the last few years, they have gained in importance and interest with the development of artificial intelligence.

Distributed cognition, dementia, and technology
2015The devastating effects of dementia result from cognitive degradation, in particular, working-memory (short-term memory) and planning processes. In supporting people with dementia, carers must take over these cognitive functions on behalf of the other person. This is an exhausting job. Technology may be able to offer assistance here.
