Active Disk File System : A Distributed, Scalable File System
2001 Eighteenth IEEE Symposium on Mass Storage Systems and Technologies, 2001Consistent improvements in processor and memory technology have led to disks having greater processing power and cache memory in a compact size. This increased processing power and memory allows disks to execute more than just the basic disk operations, sometimes, even run user defined codes.

Proceedings of the 1975 annual conference on - ACM 75, 1975
The design of a file system for a multiprocessor interactive computer system is described. The architecture of the computer system is such that direct access to a resource allocated to a process is not allowed to any other process. Thus, sharing of files can only be done by transmission of copies.

A heterogeneous distributed file system
Proceedings.,10th International Conference on Distributed Computing Systems, 2002The demands on a heterogeneous distributed file system are outlined, and the design and implementation of a prototype to meet these demands are described. This prototype, the heterogeneous computer systems file system (HFS), provides a network-wide file system supporting a simple record-oriented file model.

Distributed file systems: focus on Andrew File System/Distributed File Service (AFS/DFS)
Proceedings Thirteenth IEEE Symposium on Mass Storage Systems. Toward Distributed Storage and Data Management Systems, 2002Currently, there is a move away from huge, monolithic mainframe computers to smaller, individual workstations. This move requires that data and programs be shared between individual users on the same computer as well as across machines on a local area network (LAN) or even on a wide area network (WAN).
