Fitting the Distribution of Linear Combinations of t− Variables with more than 2 Degrees of Freedom
The linear combination of Student’s t random variables (RVs) appears in many statistical applications. Unfortunately, the Student’s t distribution is not closed under convolution, thus, deriving an exact and general distribution for the linear ...

The evolutionarily stable distribution of fitness effects [PDF]
The distribution of fitness effects of new mutations (the DFE) is a key parameter in determining the course of evolution. This fact has motivated extensive efforts to measure the DFE or to predict it from first principles. However, just as the DFE determines the course of evolution, the evolutionary process itself constrains the DFE. Here, we analyze a

Modelling of non‐Markovian queuing systems
The purpose of this paper is to suggest a method and software for evaluating queuing approximations. A numerical queuing model with priorities is used to explore the behaviour of exponential phase‐type approximation of service‐time distribution.

Quantile estimation via distribution fitting [PDF]
Summary: This paper focuses on nonparametric estimation of quantiles, based on estimators of the distribution function. We review some known and recommended quantile estimators and propose a new one, which has all the desired properties of quantile estimators. The consistency and asymptotic normality of the estimators is proved.

Fitting an Exponential Distribution
Abstract Exponential distributions of the type N = N0 exp(−λt) occur with a high frequency in a wide range of scientific disciplines. This paper argues against a widely spread method for calculating the λ parameter in this distribution.

Uncertainty inherent in empirical fitting of distributions to experimental data
Treatment of experimental data often entails fitting frequency functions, in order to draw inferences on the population underlying the sample at hand, and/or identify plausible mechanistic models.
