Decreased cold‐sensing function of the transient receptor potential channel TRPM8 from tailed amphibians

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Despite frogs avoiding low temperatures, examination of four salamander species revealed that none avoided cold and all possessed cold tolerance. Functional analysis of TRPM8, a cold sensor, showed that all salamander TRPM8s had lost their cold sensitivity.

Evolutionarily divergent DUF4465 domains have a common vitamin B12‐binding function

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
We show that DUF4465 family proteins, widespread across bacteria from gut microbiomes, hydrothermal vents, and soil, share a common vitamin B12‐binding function. These augmented β‐jellyroll proteins bind vitamin B12 via extended loops. Our findings establish sequence‐diverse DUF4465 proteins as a widespread class of B12‐binding proteins, highlighting ...

Functional Equations and Distribution Functions

Results in Mathematics, 1994
Let \(a \in (0,1)\), \(N \in \mathbb{N} \backslash \{1\}\) and \(- 1 = \beta_0 \leq \beta_1 \leq \dots \leq \beta_{N - 1} = 1\). Then the functional equation \[ f(x) = {1 \over N} \sum^{N - 1}_{k = 0} f \left( {x - \beta_k \over a} \right) \] has a unique bounded solution \(f : \mathbb{R} \to \mathbb{R}\) vanishing on \((- \infty, -1/(1 - a))\) and ...

On the Distribution Function of Additive Functions

The Annals of Mathematics, 1946
The author extends his previous work on the distribution of values of additive arithmetical functions [J. Lond. Math. Soc. 13, 119--127 (1938; Zbl 0018.29301); Am. J. Math. 61, 713--721 (1939; Zbl 0022.00903) and Am. J. Math. 61, 722--725 (1939; Zbl 0022.01001)]. Many striking results are obtained.

Estimating the Distribution Function of a Symmetric Distribution

Biometrika, 1975
SUMMARY This paper considers the problem of estimating the distribution function of a symmetric distribution when the centre of symmetry is unknown. An estimator is proposed which is shown to be asymptotically better than the empirical distribution function for well-known distributions including the normal, double exponential and Cauchy.

Tensor distribution function

SPIE Proceedings, 2008
Diffusion weighted MR imaging is a powerful tool that can be employed to study white matter microstructure by examining the 3D displacement profile of water molecules in brain tissue. By applying diffusion-sensitizing gradients along a minimum of 6 directions, second-order tensors (represetnted by 3-by-3 positive definiite matrices) can be computed to ...
