Metformin as a Multifaceted Therapeutic Agent for Gastrointestinal Diseases: Mechanisms, Clinical Efficacy, and Future Directions

open access: yesPharmacology Research &Perspectives, Volume 14, Issue 3, June 2026.
ABSTRACT The high prevalence of gastrointestinal (GI) diseases and their significant impact on the quality of life require new therapeutic strategies. The development of novel therapeutic strategies should prioritize targeting the fundamental pathophysiological mechanisms underlying these diseases, including inflammation, cellular proliferation, and ...

Intracranial Hypotension Following Spinal Manipulation: A Case Report and Scoping Review of the Literature

open access: yesBrain and Behavior, Volume 16, Issue 5, May 2026.
Abstract Purpose Spinal manipulative therapies, including chiropractic and osteopathic maneuvers, are widely practiced for musculoskeletal complaints. However, rare but serious complications such as cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leak with subsequent intracranial hypotension (IH) have been described.

Bowel Ischemia: A Life‐Threatening Complication of an Infected Urachal Cyst in an Adolescent

open access: yesClinical Case Reports, Volume 14, Issue 5, May 2026.
ABSTRACT While infection is a recognized complication of congenital urachal cysts, progression to an inflammatory phlegmon causing bowel ischemia is an exceptionally rare and life‐threatening event in the pediatric population. We report the case of a 14‐year‐old male with a 7‐year history of an infraumbilical mass who presented with an acute abdomen ...

Intestinal Ultrasound of Adult Small Bowel Intussusception Caused by a Polyp: A Case Report

open access: yesClinical Case Reports, Volume 14, Issue 5, May 2026.
Intestinal ultrasound findings in adult small bowel intussusception caused by a polyp. ABSTRACT Intestinal ultrasound may facilitate early diagnosis of adult small bowel intussusception and can directly demonstrate a pathological lead point such as an intraluminal polyp. In patients with nonspecific abdominal symptoms, this may expedite CT confirmation,

Comparative Analysis Reveals the Adaptive Evolution of Olfactory System in the Swamp Eel (Monopterus albus) Based on the Chromosome‐Level Genome

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 16, Issue 5, May 2026.
A total of 629 gene families were identified to expand in the swamp eel, with five (OLFR, GNAL, PRKG1, NCALD, and PDE1) distributed in olfactory transduction (KEGG map04740). A total of 318 OR genes (289 functional genes, 10 partial genes, and 19 pseudogenes) were annotated in the swamp eel genome, significantly surpassing other fish species.

Pediatric vascular compression of the esophagus: Endoluminal functional lumen imaging probe as a complement to imaging and endoscopy

open access: yesJPGN Reports, Volume 7, Issue 2, Page 192-199, May 2026.
Abstract Objectives Vascular anomalies can cause extrinsic esophageal compression, leading to dysphagia or feeding difficulties in children. Diagnosis typically relies on imaging and endoscopy, which may under‐ or overestimate functional narrowing. Endoluminal functional lumen imaging probe (EndoFLIP) provides luminal parameters in real‐time, but its ...

Carrier screening in the reproductive setting—Are there medical implications for the heterozygote?—A guide for clinicians

open access: yesPregnancy, Volume 2, Issue 3, May 2026.
Abstract Carrier screening for genetic conditions performed preconception or during pregnancy allows identification of fetal risk for inherited autosomal recessive and X‐linked conditions. The goal is to identify at‐risk patients/couples and offer them reproductive options such as preimplantation genetic diagnosis, prenatal testing, or targeted newborn

Optimizing Cassava Starch Residue Inclusion in Broiler Diets: Balancing Growth Performance, Liver Health and Gut Microbial Dynamics

open access: yesVeterinary Medicine and Science, Volume 12, Issue 3, May 2026.
Moderate inclusion (20–30%) of cassava starch residue in broiler diets improved gut morphology and reduced E. coli counts with minimal adverse effects, while higher levels impaired growth and liver health. The findings highlight CSR's potential as a partial maize replacement, but caution is needed at elevated inclusion rates.
