Many of the serious complications of diverticulitis can be prevented by careful dietary and medical management instituted early in the disease. At least 80 per cent of cases of early diverticulitis can be successfully managed in this way. If surgical intervention is indicated, it is preferable to operate at a time when a one stage resection is feasible.

It should be kept in mind when considering obscure abdominal cases such as possible sigmoiditis, appendicitis, especially true transposed left-sided appendicitis, carcinoma, tuberculosis and some pelvic lesions. There are no characteristic symptoms known.

Diseases of the Colon & Rectum, 1982The authors' experience with right-sided diverticulitis is reviewed. The symptoms among 18 patients were continuous right lower quadrant abdominal pain and periumbilical pain radiating to the right lower quadrant. Only three patients had nausea and vomiting.
