Diverticula of the colon are very common in developed countries. In most of those affected diverticulosis is an asymptomatic condition. Only 20% complain of recurrent symptoms. Symptomatic diverticulosis is common only after the age of 50. Dietary treatment combined with antispasmodics is generally sufficient.
