The Zenker’s diverticulum is an out pouching of the hypopharynx arising between the fibers of the cricopharyngeus inferiorly and the inferior constrictor superiorly. This region of herniation is known as Killian’s triangle. Patients often present with a longstanding history of gradually increasing dysphagia of both solids and liquids.

The predominant symptoms are dysphagia and regurgitation which may result in malnutrition and aspiration pneumonia, the latter eventually being life threatening.

Records of 72 consecutive patients with caliceal diverticula, representing an incidence of 4.5 per 1,000 excretory urograms, were studied. Of these 72 patients, 39 per cent had a history of recurrent infections and an equal number had stone-containing diverticula. However, only 17 per cent had roentgenographic evidence of pyelonephritis.
