On the importance of integrating comparative anatomy and One Health perspectives in anatomy education. [PDF]

open access: yesJ Anat, 2022
Acquiring a robust knowledge of comparative anatomy as part of the medical curriculum helps in understanding diseases better. This review article converges the ideas discussed in a symposium on One Health arranged during the IFAA2019 and prioritises an action plan of integrating veterinary knowledge into the medical curriculum.

Narrowly defined taxa on a global scale: The phylogeny and taxonomy of the genera Catriona and Tenellia (Nudibranchia, Trinchesiidae) favours fine‐scale taxonomic differentiation and dissolution of the “lumpers & splitters” dilemma

open access: yesEvolutionary Applications, Volume 16, Issue 2, Page 428-460, February 2023., 2023
Abstract By applying morphological and molecular data on two genera of the nudibranch molluscs it is shown that the tension between taxonomic practice and evolutionary processes persists. A review of the related genera Catriona and Tenellia is used to demonstrate that the fine‐scale taxonomic differentiation is an important tool in the integration of ...

Heterotopic Gastric Mucosa Causing Rectal Bleeding in a Young Child

open access: yesJPGN Reports, Volume 3, Issue 2, May 2022., 2022
Heterotopic gastric mucosa (HGM) in the colon and small bowel is a very rare finding. We report a case of HGM in the rectum of an 8‐year‐old child with a history of eosinophilic esophagitis after having a colonoscopy to evaluate for inflammatory bowel disease. The colonoscopy was normal except for rectal tissue erythema and edema.

Ingestion and Toxicity of Polystyrene Microplastics in Freshwater Bivalves

open access: yesEnvironmental Toxicology and Chemistry, Volume 40, Issue 8, Page 2247-2260, August 2021., 2021
Microplastic ingestion by freshwater mussels depends on the exposure time, body size, food availability, and microplastic concentration. Polystyrene fragments (≤63 µm) affected mussels' clearance rate but not mortality, energy reserves, or oxidative stress. PS = polystyrene; MP = microplastics.

The circulatory system of Penaeus vannamei Boone, 1931—Lacunar function and a reconsideration of the “open vs. closed system” debate

open access: yesJournal of Morphology, Volume 281, Issue 4-5, Page 500-512, April-May 2020., 2020
The morphology of the hemolymph circulatory system of the decapod Penaeus vannamei is investigated. As well as the complex vascular system, distinct lacunae are investigated three‐dimensionally and interpreted on a functional level. Abstract The morphology of hemolymph circulatory systems has been studied in many arthropod groups over the past decades.

Phoronidea from Brazil [PDF]

open access: yes, 1959
