Routes to divertor detachment in ASDEX Upgrade

Journal of Nuclear Materials, 1997
Abstract A simple analytic model of divertor radiation is used as a framework for identifying different routes to divertor detachment. Three means of achieving detachment are demonstrated experimentally including, increasing plasma density, purposely increasing the impurity level and increasing the scrape-off layer connection length.

Divertor plasma detachment

Physics of Plasmas, 2016
Regime with the plasma detached from the divertor targets (detached divertor regime) is a natural continuation of the high recycling conditions to higher density and stronger impurity radiation loss. Both the theoretical considerations and experimental data show clearly that the increase of the impurity radiation loss and volumetric plasma ...

Plasma recombination and divertor detachment

Physics Letters A, 1996
AbstractWe consider the influence on plasma recombination of the formation of negative and molecular ions in divertor plasma. We take into account different atomic processes (vibrational excitation of molecular hydrogen, electron dissociative attachment, ion conversion, charge exchange and dissociative recombinations, dissociation and ionization, etc.)

Partially detached radiative divertor with active divertor pumping

Nuclear Fusion, 1997
Deuterium fuelled radiative diverters, operating in the partially detached divertor (PDD) regime, are effective in reducing the heat load on the divertor target. These PDD discharges are shown to be compatible with active particle exhaust conditions-an important issue for ITER type operation.

Characteristics of divertor detachment for ITER conditions

Journal of Nuclear Materials, 2015
Abstract The relative role of particle balance vs. momentum balance in the phenomenon of divertor plasma detachment in tokamaks is re-assessed. Ion removal from the plasma flow by volumetric recombination and/or cross-field transport is identified as the key element in the formation of the rollover of the ion saturation current on the targets ...

Operation space of divertor detachment in DEMO

2015 IEEE 26th Symposium on Fusion Engineering (SOFE), 2015
In the paper we consider the operation window of DEMO divertor detachment expected under DEMO I operation conditions for various external impurity levels, particle throughput and pumping conditions, envisaged for fusion reactor. The operation region is defined in terms of upstream heat flux and the upstream density and is bounded by the burn conditions
