Abstract A new upper divertor with in-vessel coils to investigate ‘advanced’ magnetic configurations will be installed in ASDEX Upgrade. ‘Advanced’ magnetic configurations are part of a risk mitigation strategy should the conventional divertor configuration approach not be applicable for future fusion reactors.
