Long-term accuracy of DLCO devices

Respiratory function technologists/scientists, 2021
Introduction: Accurate diffusing capacity for carbon monoxide (DLCO) devices are required for clinical use and research studes; however, 25% of instruments do not meet accuracy standards (Jensen, R. et al. Eur Resp J 2009; 33:828-34). Objectives: We aimed to determine long-term accuracy of DLCO devices used in the COPDGene study.

Adjustment of DLCO for hemoglobin concentration.

American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine, 1997
The equation proposed by Cotes and coworkers is currently considered as the most acceptable to correct carbon monoxide diffusing capacity (DLCO) for hemoglobin concentration [Hb] by both the American Thoracic Society (ATS) and the European Respiratory Society (ERS) guidelines for standardization of DLCO.

The DLNO/DLCO ratio: Physiological significance and clinical implications

Respiratory Physiology & Neurobiology, 2017
DLNO/DLCO directly measures the ratio of the diffusing capacities of the lung for nitric oxide (NO) and carbon monoxide (CO). In terms of the Roughton and Forster (1957) equation, 1/DL=1/Dm+1/θVc, where Dm is the membrane (Dm) and θVc is the red cell component of the overall diffusing conductance (DL); DLNO mostly reflects the Dm component and DLCO the

The measurement of DLNO and DLCO: A manufacturer's perspective

Respiratory Physiology & Neurobiology, 2017
The simultaneous measurement of the lung transfer factor for carbon monoxide (DLCO) and nitric oxide (DLNO) is now available as a powerful method for studying the alveolar-capillary gas exchange. However, application of the DLNO-CO technique in daily settings is still limited by some technical drawbacks. This paper provides a manufacturer's overview of

A modified single-breath DLCO apparatus.

Respiratory therapy, 1984
A modified apparatus for measuring the single-breath carbon monoxide diffusing capacity of the lung (DLCO) is described. The modification permits simultaneous measurement of all lung volumes and capacities. In a comparison of conventional and modified devices, no significant differences for the measures of DLCO and total lung capacity were found.
