Development of High Performance Micro DMFCS and a DMFC Stack

Journal of Fuel Cell Science and Technology, 2005
A silicon-based micro direct methanol fuel cell (μDMFC) for portable applications has been fabricated and its electrochemical characterization carried out. A membrane-electrode assembly (MEA) was specially fabricated to mitigate methanol crossover. The cell with active area of 1.625cm2 demonstrated a maximum power density of 50mW∕cm2 at 60°C. Since the

PVdF-Based Membranes for DMFC Applications

Journal of The Electrochemical Society, 2003
This paper reports the synthesis and the properties of microporous, ceramic-added, composite poly(vinylidene) fluoride (PVdF)-based proton conducting membranes for direct methanol fuel cells (DMFCs). The favorable characteristics of these membranes are an high and stable conductivity, a proton transport mechanism not critically related to the water ...

Targeting improved DMFC performance

Journal of Power Sources, 2002
Improved DMFC performance through reduction in the extent of methanol crossover in the polymer electrolyte membrane is described. Introduction of a thin barrier layer of polybenzimidazole (PBI) at the Nafion®117 surface by screen printing is shown to reduce methanol permeability whilst maintaining proton conductivity at a level comparable to that of ...

Performance of Microtubular DMFCs

Electrochemical and Solid-State Letters, 2004
A novel design for a direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC) is proposed using a microtubular electrolyte. The performance of microtubular DMFCs was tested under several preparation conditions. We show that the catalyst layer composition and the hot-pressing process are critical to microtubular DMFC performance.

Portable Size DMFC‐Stack

Fuel Cells, 2004
AbstractA small, low temperature, direct methanol fuel cell stack for portable applications has been developed. Several flow field designs were investigated with respect to stable operation and high performance. Due to carbon dioxide and water production on the anode and cathode, respectively, methanol and oxygen access to the electrodes is hindered ...
