Prescribing DMPA to Teens

Journal of Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology, 2010
Kara is a 15-year-old African American teen who is 2 weeks postpartum and has come today for birth control. Her body mass index (BMI) today is 32. The young man who fathered her child is no longer part of her life, but she has begun a new relationship with another young man. Her pregnancy resulted because of inconsistent oral contraceptive use, and she

Depot-medroxyprogesterone acetate (DMPA) and cancer of the endometrium and ovary

Contraception, 1994
This review addresses possible associations between depot-medroxy-progesterone acetate (DMPA) and endometrial and epithelial ovarian cancers. Two unexpected endometrial carcinomas were observed at autopsy of rhesus monkeys treated for 10 years with 50 times the human doses of DMPA.

Subcutaneous DMPA: a better lower dose approach

Contraception, 2014
Family Planning 2020s admirable goal is to reach an additional 120 million women with contraceptive services. Achieving that goal will provide those women substantial benefits including health benefits by offering them choice of a wide range of contraceptive contraceptives.

Subcutaneous DMPA vs. intramuscular DMPA: a 2-year randomized study of contraceptive efficacy and bone mineral density

Contraception, 2009
A formulation of depot medroxyprogesterone acetate (DMPA) has been developed that allows subcutaneous injection (104 mg/0.65 mL; DMPA-SC) and achieves highly effective contraception with a similar tolerability profile to intramuscular DMPA (150 mg/mL; DMPA-IM).This randomized, evaluator-blinded study was designed to compare efficacy, safety, and user ...

Preface—updating DMPA safety

Contraception, 1994
Depot-medroxyprogesterone acetate (DMPA) is currently used for contraception by about nine million women in more than 90 countries. DMPA injected intramuscularly at a dose of 150 mg every 3 months is among the most effective reversible contraceptive methods.

Methylene Blue Adsorption on a DMPA Lipid Langmuir Monolayer

ChemPhysChem, 2010
AbstractAdsorption of methylene blue (MB) onto a dimyristoylphosphatidic acid (DMPA) Langmuir air/water monolayer is studied by molecular dynamics (MD) simulations, UV reflection spectroscopy and surface potential measurements. The free‐energy profile associated with MB transfer from water to the lipid monolayer shows two minima of −66 and −60 kJ mol−1

Use-effectiveness of six-month injections of DMPA as a contraceptive

American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology, 1974
Abstract A total of 1,132 women using six-month injections of depot-type DMPA for up to 5½ years, with a total usage of 4,037 woman-years, were studied for continuation rates, reasons for discontinuation, method failure rates, and bleeding patterns. Each woman was given 400 mg. of DMPA intramuscularly every 24 weeks.

Ion Interactions and Electrostatic Effects on TMPyP/DMPA Monolayers

Langmuir, 1998
In this work, the influence of the different ionic strengths in the aqueous subphase on the monomer−dimer equilibrium of a water-soluble tetracationic porphyrin, TMPyP, in a complex monolayer containing an insoluble lipid with negatively charged group, DMPA, has been investigated.

Chronic endometritis in DMPA users and Chlamydia trachomatis endometritis

Contraception, 2007
This study was conducted to determine the prevalence of Chlamydia trachomatis (CT) in the endometrium of depot medroxyprogesterone acetate (DMPA) users with and without breakthrough bleeding (BTB) (unscheduled bleeding) and/or chronic endometritis (CE).Cross-sectional study.
