Comparative Antimicrobial Effects of Dimethylsulfoxide and Dimethylsulfone on the Planktonic Growth and Viability of Porphyromonas gingivalis and Their Cytotoxic Effects on Human Oral Epithelial Cells

open access: yesBacteria
Background: Past studies have documented the antimicrobial effects of dimethyl sulfoxide (D.M.SO). However, the side effects and toxicity profiles of DMSO in vivo have been a significant deterrent for its wide-ranging clinical use. Dimethyl sulfone (DMSO-

β‐Catenin/c‐Myc Axis Modulates Autophagy Response to Different Ammonia Concentrations

open access: yesAdvanced Biology, Volume 9, Issue 3, March 2025.
Ammonia, detoxified by the liver into urea and glutamine, impacts autophagy differently at varying levels. Low ammonia activates autophagy via c‐Myc and β‐catenin, while high levels suppress it. Using Huh7 cells and Spf‐ash mice, c‐Myc's role in cytoprotective autophagy is revealed, offering insights into hyperammonemia and potential therapeutic ...

Investigation of Oxygen‐Free Wetting Behavior of Aluminum on Copper via Molecular Dynamics Simulations and Experiments

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
The wettability of aluminum droplets (Al) on different copper substrates (Cu), where liquid Al spreads on solid Cu surfaces to form a liquid–solid interface, is studied numerically and experimentally. The experimental and numerical results show good agreement in the fast‐spreading regime.

Intermolecular Interactions as Driving Force of Increasing Multiphoton Absorption in a Perylene Diimide‐Based Coordination Polymer

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
This study uncovers the unexplored role of intermolecular interactions in multiphoton absorption in coordination polymers. By analyzing [Zn2tpda(DMA)2(DMF)0.3], it shows how the electronic coupling of the chromophores and confinement in the MOF enhance two‐and three‐photon absorption.

Pharmaceuticals entering Lake Champlain and their combination effects on developing Zebrafish Embryos [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Human-derived pharmaceuticals have been identified entering surface waters in the United States through wastewater effluent. While there is ample literature about what each compound alone does to aquatic life, little is known about the effects aquatic ...

3D (Bio) Printing Combined Fiber Fabrication Methods for Tissue Engineering Applications: Possibilities and Limitations

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Biofabrication aims at providing innovative technologies and tools for the fabrication of tissue‐like constructs for tissue engineering and regenerative medicine applications. By integrating multiple biofabrication technologies, such as 3D (bio) printing with fiber fabrication methods, it would be more realistic to reconstruct native tissue's ...

Evaluation of Cryopreservation of Bovine Ovarian Tissue by Analysis of Reactive Species of Oxygen, Toxicity, Morphometry, and Morphology

open access: yesVeterinary Sciences
Ovarian tissue cryopreservation has been widely investigated for preserving female fertility. In the present study, we aimed to compare the effects of three concentrations (1, 1.5, and 3 M) of dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) on the vitrification of ovarian ...

Modulating Two‐Photon Absorption in a Pyrene‐Based MOF Series: An In‐Depth Investigation of Structure–Property Relationships

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
This study investigates H4TBAPy‐based metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) ‐ NU‐1000, NU‐901, SrTBAPy, and BaTBAPy ‐ for multiphoton absorption (MPA) performance. It observes topology‐dependent variations in the 2PA cross‐section, with BaTBAPy exhibiting the highest activity.

Near‐Infrared Emitting Lanthanide Catecholate Giant Single Crystals – Morphology Control and Photon Down‐Conversion

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Controlled syntheses of lanthanide coordination polymers based on the dihydroxybenzoquinone (DHBQ) organic linker afforded large single crystals of Ln‐DHBQ CPs (Ln = Yb, Nd). A novel structural variant of Yb‐DHBQ is identified by means of single crystal diffraction analysis.

Dimethyl sulfoxide in cryopreserved mesenchymal stromal cell therapy products: is there a safety risk to patients?

open access: yesJournal of Translational Medicine
Dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) is the preferred cryoprotectant for the cryopreservation of mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs). As DMSO has been associated with in-vivo toxicity, its potential side effects when administered with MSC therapies are a matter of ...
