Monitoring the electric power consumption by lighting from DMSP/OLS nighttime satellite imagery

2011 IEEE International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium, 2011
In this study, we attempted to estimate the electric power consumption using the Defense Meteorological Satellite Program (DMSP)/Operational Linescan System (OLS) stable light imagery after correction for saturation effected. Digital numbers (DNs) of a stable light image are saturated in the center of city areas.

Detection of Urban Expansion by using DMSP-OLS, Landsat Data and Linear Spectral Unmixing Method

International Journal of 3-D Information Modeling, 2015
Urbanization has been increasingly continuing in Turkey and in the world for the last 30 years. Especially for the developing countries, urbanization is a necessary fact for the sustainability of the urban growth. Yet, this growth should be controlled and planned; otherwise, many environmental problems might occur.

The Kamishak Gap wind as depicted in DMSP OLS and SSM/I data

International Journal of Remote Sensing, 1993
Abstract DMSP visual and infrared Operational Line Scanner (OLS) data reveal several effects of a mountain gap wind generated by wind flow through the Kamishak Gap on the west side of Cook Inlet, Alaska. The existence of the wind can be inferred through one of three separate effects apparent in the data: (1) a roughened sea effect, appearing as a dark ...

Urban mapping using DMSP/OLS stable night-time light: a review

International Journal of Remote Sensing, 2017
ABSTRACTThe Defense Meteorological Satellite Program/Operational Linescane System (DMSP/OLS) stable night-time light (NTL) data showed great potential in urban extent mapping across a variety of scales with historical records dating back to 1990s. In order to advance this data, a systematic methodology review on NTL-based urban extent mapping was ...

Spatial analysis of global urban extent from DMSP-OLS night lights

Remote Sensing of Environment, 2005
Abstract Previous studies of DMSP-OLS stable night lights have shown encouraging agreement between temporally stable lighted areas and various definitions of urban extent. However, these studies have also highlighted an inconsistent relationship between the actual lighted area and the boundaries of the urban areas considered.

Study on radiometric intercalibration methods for DMSP-OLS night-time light imagery

International Journal of Remote Sensing, 2016
The Defense Meteorological Satellite Program Operational Linescan System DMSP-OLS night-time light image sets has been successfully used in various fields to monitor temporal and spatial distributions, such as urbanization and socioeconomic activities.

Monitoring urbanization dynamics in the Southeast U.S. using DMSP/OLS nightlight time series

2016 IEEE International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium (IGARSS), 2016
The Southeast U.S. is listed one of the fastest growing regions by the Census Bureau. The Defense Meteorological Satellite Program (DMSP)'s Operational Line-scan System (OLS) nighttime light (NTL) imagery offers a good opportunity for characterizing the extent and dynamics of urban development at global and regional scales.

Using DMSP OLS Imagery to Characterize Urban Populations in Developed and Developing Countries

2010
Nighttime Satellite imagery shows great potential for mapping and monitoring many human activities including: (1) population size, distribution, and growth, (2) urban extent and rates of urbanization, (3) impervious surface, (4) energy consumption, and (5) CO2 emissions.
