Monitoring Population Evolution in China Using Time-Series DMSP/OLS Nightlight Imagery [PDF]

open access: yesRemote Sensing, 2018
Accurate and detailed monitoring of population distribution and evolution is of great significance in formulating a population planning strategy in China. The Defense Meteorological Satellite Program’s Operational Linescan System (DMSP/OLS) nighttime lights time-series (NLT) image products offer a good opportunity for detecting the population ...

A Stepwise Calibration of Global DMSP/OLS Stable Nighttime Light Data (1992–2013) [PDF]

open access: yesRemote Sensing, 2017
The Defense Meteorological Satellite Program (DMSP)/Operational Linescan System (OLS) stable nighttime light (NTL) data provide a wide range of potentials for studying global and regional dynamics, such as urban sprawl and electricity consumption. However, due to the lack of on-board calibration, it requires inter-annual calibration for these practical

iSEAM: Improving the Blooming Effect Adjustment for DMSP-OLS Nighttime Light Images by Considering Spatial Heterogeneity of Blooming Distance

open access: yesIEEE Journal of Selected Topics in Applied Earth Observations and Remote Sensing, 2021
The longest archive makes DMSP-OLS nighttime light (NTL) images unparalleled in relevant time series studies. However, these studies have been constrained by the blooming effect.

Subnational Border Reforms and Economic Activity in Africa

open access: yesOxford Bulletin of Economics and Statistics, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Using GIS methods, we identify territories in Africa affected by subnational border reforms between 1992 and 2013. Descriptive statistics reveal that these territories differed from other African regions across several key dimensions. For example, these territories were more populous and exhibited greater ethnic diversity.

A Case for a New Satellite Mission for Remote Sensing of Night Lights

open access: yesRemote Sensing, 2021
The physiology and behavior of most life at or near the Earth’s surface has evolved over billions of years to be attuned with our planet’s natural light–dark cycle of day and night.
