Sustainable DNA Data Storage on Cellulose Paper
Small Methods, 2023AbstractDNA is a promising material for high density and long‐term archival data storage. In addition to algorithms for encoding digital information into DNA sequences, the DNA writing (chemical synthesis) and reading (DNA sequencing), the preservation of DNA mixtures with high sequence diversity is another critical issue for sustainable, long‐term ...

Here we report a simple and flexible method for DNA data storage based on Perl script. For this approach, the text data of the preamble of the “Universal Declaration of Human Rights” consisting of 2,046 words was encoded into the corresponding 8,148 base pairs of DNA using Perl-based encoding with a hash table.

One-step data storage in cellular DNA
Nature Chemical Biology, 2021The cumbersome encoding of digital data to cellular DNA hinders the use of cells as living hard drives. A new approach transfers digital information directly into cellular DNA by converting electrical signals into stable and interpretable changes in the genomes of bacterial populations.

Trends in Biotechnology, 2001
This article discusses how DNA might be used to store data. It is argued that, at present, DNA would be best employed as a long-term repository (thousands or millions of years). How data-containing DNA might be packaged and how the data might be encrypted, with particular attention to the encryption of written information, is also discussed.
