A Smart Visual Sensing Concept Involving Deep Learning for a Robust Optical Character Recognition under Hard Real-World Conditions

open access: yesSensors, 2022
In this study, we propose a new model for optical character recognition (OCR) based on both CNNs (convolutional neural networks) and RNNs (recurrent neural networks).

Structural instability impairs function of the UDP‐xylose synthase 1 Ile181Asn variant associated with short‐stature genetic syndrome in humans

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The Ile181Asn variant of human UDP‐xylose synthase (hUXS1), associated with a short‐stature genetic syndrome, has previously been reported as inactive. Our findings demonstrate that Ile181Asn‐hUXS1 retains catalytic activity similar to the wild‐type but exhibits reduced stability, a looser oligomeric state, and an increased tendency to precipitate ...

The (Glg)ABCs of cyanobacteria: modelling of glycogen synthesis and functional divergence of glycogen synthases in Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We reconstituted Synechocystis glycogen synthesis in vitro from purified enzymes and showed that two GlgA isoenzymes produce glycogen with different architectures: GlgA1 yields denser, highly branched glycogen, whereas GlgA2 synthesizes longer, less‐branched chains.

Gender Equality Policies in the European Union and Kazakhstan: A Comparative Study

open access: yesJournal of Central Asian Studies
Kazakhstan has made significant progress in institutionalizing gender equality. However, there are still existing challenges, including the gender pay gap, women’s underrepresentation in leadership positions, and gender-based violence. This study aims to

Role of verbs in document analysis [PDF]

open access: yesProceedings of the 36th annual meeting on Association for Computational Linguistics -, 1998
We present results of two methods for assessing the event profile of news articles as a function of verb type. The unique contribution of this research is the focus on the role of verbs, rather than nouns. Two algorithms are presented and evaluated, one of which is shown to accurately discriminate documents by type and semantic properties, i.e.

Organ‐specific redox imbalances in spinal muscular atrophy mice are partially rescued by SMN antisense oligonucleotides

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We identified a systemic, progressive loss of protein S‐glutathionylation—detected by nonreducing western blotting—alongside dysregulation of glutathione‐cycle enzymes in both neuronal and peripheral tissues of Taiwanese SMA mice. These alterations were partially rescued by SMN antisense oligonucleotide therapy, revealing persistent redox imbalance as ...

Document analysis

open access: yes, 2019
This chapter examines use of document analysis as a research tool for exploring dominant but often hidden textual discourses relating to education and social equality. It first considers definition and uses of this approach as part of wider critical analysis of texts, images and speech acts, known as discourse analysis.
