Document Image Analysis

2011
One of the main distinguishing features of a document is its layout, as determined by the organization of, and reciprocal relationships among, the single components that make it up. For many tasks, one can afford to work at the level of single pages, since the various pages in multi-page documents are usually sufficiently unrelated to be processed ...

Using typography in document image analysis

1998
Even if font usage plays an important role in Document Image Analysis (DIA), recognition systems generally take the concept of font management in a weaker sense than in the production cycle. With the point of view of the document recognition community, we show how typographic information (characters bitmap, metrics, etc.) can improve existing analysis ...

Resolution-sensitive document image analysis for document repurposing

The Thrity-Seventh Asilomar Conference on Signals, Systems & Computers, 2003, 2004
The variety of displays used to browse and view images has created a need to adapt an image representation to the size constraints of a given display. In this paper a resolution-sensitive analysis of document images is performed that segments images into text and image regions using document layout analysis and JPEG 2000 header-based processing ...

Document analysis by processing JBIG-encoded images

International Journal of Document Analysis and Recognition (IJDAR), 2005
Techniques are presented to directly process JBIG-encoded document images. Two experimental processing pipelines are designed to evaluate the performance of the methods from the application perspective. They are document segmentation for obtaining the global layout and the form processing system for form type identification and the form dropout.

A fast multifunctional approach for document image analysis

Seventh International Conference on Document Analysis and Recognition, 2003. Proceedings., 2003
Collinear arrangement of objects (such as, text elementsor continuous lines) is integral part of any officedocument image, whether structured or unstructured. Theability to analyze such an organization of objects thusprovides the basic and important building block for aplethora of image analysis applications.

Digital geometric methods in document image analysis

Pattern Recognition, 1999
One of the main tasks of digital image analysis is to recognize the properties of real objects based on their digital images. These images are obtained by some sampling device, like a CCD camera, and are represented as finite sets of points that are assigned some value in a gray level or color scale.

New segmentation techniques for document image analysis

Image and Vision Computing, 1995
Abstract In this paper, some raster image segmentation techniques are proposed to extract character/graphic pixels from scanned document images. These methods are very efficient in extracting character/graphic pixels from the images with a variety of background types.

Document image analysis with OCRopus

2009 IEEE 13th International Multitopic Conference, 2009
Document image analysis is the field of converting paper documents into an editable electronic representation by performing optical character recognition (OCR). In recent years, there has been a tremendous amount of progress in the development of open source OCR systems.
