It is a common source of clinically significant disease in the dog. Cats do possess a prostate gland, but it is rarely diagnosed as being diseased.

Pericardial disease in the dog
In Practice, 1999PERICARDIAL diseases are not as common as valvular, myocardial or congenital heart diseases. However, they are encountered reasonably frequently in practice and are probably one of the most common causes of right‐sided congestive heart failure in dogs. In contrast, clinically significant pericardial disease is rare in the cat.
