The long-legged flies (Diptera: Dolichopodidae) from Kurile Islands, with description of a new species of the genus Sciapus Zeller, 1842

open access: yesFar Eastern entomologist, 2022
An annotated list of dolichopodid species recorded from Kurile Archipelago (Russia) is given for the first time. Sciapus basarukini sp. n. from Kunashir Island is described and illustrated.

The development of insect diversity and ecosystem complexity on green roofs: A review

open access: yesInsect Conservation and Diversity, Volume 19, Issue 1, Page 11-25, January 2026.
A classification system of different roof types is presented to improve consistency in green roof research. Landscape and green roof characteristics influence ecosystem development, but can be further explained by ecological concepts, like neutral and niche theory.

A bibliography of works for the identification of freshwater invertebrates in the British Isles [PDF]

open access: yes, 1979
This bibliography covers the literature up to the end of 1978. The criteria used in the selection of references were that they should aid identification of invertebrates directly; thus, works solely concerned with the taxonomy of a particular group are ...

Two predatory Medetera (Diptera: Dolichopodidae) species associated with Ips acuminatus (Gyllenhal) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) in Bulgaria

open access: yesHistoria naturalis Bulgarica, 2022
In 2021 and 2022, two predatory flies from the genus Medetera (Diptera: Dolichopodidae) were recorded in galleries of Ips acuminatus (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) on Pinus sylvestris trees in Sredna Gora Mountain in Bulgaria: M. pinicola and M. dendrobaena.

Bryo‐zoophily: a new look at the ecology of moss and animal interactions

open access: yesNew Zealand Journal of Botany, Volume 63, Issue 5, Page 2275-2299, December 2025.
ABSTRACT Interactions between plants and animals often play a major role in the ecology of both partners. While such interactions are well studied in vascular plants such as angiosperms and gymnosperms, they are less well understood in bryophytes. However, an extensive search of the scientific literature reveals several cases of known and suspected ...

Water‐saving strategies in rice farming entail cascading effects in prey–predator interactions across ecosystem boundaries

open access: yesJournal of Applied Ecology, Volume 62, Issue 9, Page 2273-2282, September 2025.
These results show that introducing multiple drainage periods in rice fields (i.e. AWD) indirectly hampers terrestrial spider reproduction through limiting the emergence of potential preys from the aquatic to terrestrial boundaries. MSD resulted in a more conciliatory strategy as it largely reduces methane emissions and does not affect predator–prey ...

Lords of the flies: dipteran migrants are diverse, abundant and ecologically important

open access: yesBiological Reviews, Volume 100, Issue 4, Page 1635-1659, August 2025.
ABSTRACT Insect migrants are hugely abundant, with recent studies identifying the megadiverse order Diptera as the major component of many migratory assemblages. Despite this, their migratory behaviour has been widely overlooked in favour of more ‘charismatic’ migrant insects such as butterflies, dragonflies, and moths.

Phylogenetic analyses using molecular markers reveal ecological lineages in Medetera (Diptera: Dolichopodidae) [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Medetera Fischer von Waldheim is the most speciose genus in the Medeterinae, with a nearly ubiquitous global distribution. Phylogenetic relationships within Medetera and between Medetera and four other medeterine genera were investigated using ...

Winter mortality of the bark beetle Ips typographus in standing trees and in the ground

open access: yesAgricultural and Forest Entomology, Volume 27, Issue 2, Page 211-222, May 2025.
Abstract Ips typographus is the most important tree‐killing bark beetle in Europe. In the north, it overwinters either in the bark of its host tree or in the ground, while in central Europe, overwintering in trees is most common. Few studies have estimated winter mortality of I. typographus in northern Europe. Mortality of I.
