The Evolution of Masturbation in Birds

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 16, Issue 6, June 2026.
Masturbation has been sporadically documented across animal groups, yet the evolutionary origins and persistence of this sexual behaviour are largely unexplored. Through combining targeted surveys with published accounts, we test hypotheses about why masturbation occurs using a phylogenetically broad dataset on the presence or absence of masturbation ...

Mating Attempts and Sustained Interest Behaviors of Wild Boars (Sus scrofa) Toward a Dead Conspecific

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 16, Issue 6, June 2026.
We documented behavioral responses of wild boars (Sus scrofa) to a conspecific carcass using camera traps throughout the full decomposition process. One adult male exhibited necrophilic behavior and sustained non‐feeding interactions with the carcass, highlighting pronounced individual variation.

First Documented Resighting of a Dwarf Minke Whale From Calf to Adulthood in the Great Barrier Reef Indicates Long‐Term Colour Pattern Stability and Site Fidelity

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 16, Issue 6, June 2026.
A predictable winter aggregation of dwarf minke whales occurs annually in the Great Barrier Reef, where interannual site fidelity has been documented in adults but not previously in calves. Comparison of all photographed calves from 2003 to 2023 with a long‐term photo‐identification catalogue revealed one individual resighted from calf to adulthood ...

Monitoring dolphinfish catches and diel assemblage fluctuations using eDNA at fish‐aggregating devices

open access: yesEcosphere, Volume 17, Issue 6, June 2026.
Abstract Fish‐aggregating devices (FADs) are man‐made objects designed to attract fish, with the aim of facilitating spatially heterogeneous aggregations of marine species. These objects influence the structure of pelagic fisheries, consequently affecting fish distributions and interactions. One of the most iconic epipelagic species targeted using FADs

Effect of Underwater Swimming on Physiological and Perceptual Parameters in Competitive Swimmers: A Comparison With Surface Swimming

open access: yesEuropean Journal of Sport Science, Volume 26, Issue 6, June 2026.
ABSTRACT In competition, swimmers alternate between swimming on the surface and underwater; they therefore train in apnea to improve their tolerance to lack of oxygen during exercise, even though research in this area remains limited. The aim of the study was to investigate the impact of underwater swimming on physiological and perceptual responses of ...
