Proceedings of the 14th ACM SIGPLAN International Conference on Software Language Engineering, 2021 Runtime monitoring and logging are fundamental techniques for analyzing and supervising the behavior of computer programs. However, supporting these techniques for a given language induces significant development costs that can hold language engineers back from providing adequate logging and monitoring tooling for new domain-specific modeling languages.

Unembedding domain-specific languages [PDF]
Proceedings of the 2nd ACM SIGPLAN symposium on Haskell, 2009 Higher-order abstract syntax provides a convenient way of embedding domain-specific languages, but is awkward to analyse and manipulate directly. We explore the boundaries of higher-order abstract syntax. Our key tool is the unembedding of embedded terms as de Bruijn terms, enabling intensional analysis.
