Signatures of selection detected from whole‐genome sequencing indicate that the small body size in dwarf rabbit breeds is caused by polygenic effects with a few major loci

open access: yesAnimal Genetics, Volume 56, Issue 4, August 2025.
Abstract Early genetic studies have suggested that body size in rabbits can be considered a quantitative trait. Several rabbit breeds can be distinguished based on body size, including a few dwarf breeds differentiated by other morphological characteristics.

US employment exposure to domestic and foreign tariff changes under NAFTA

open access: yesApplied Economic Perspectives and Policy, Volume 47, Issue 3, Page 1058-1094, July 2025.
Abstract Literature examining the effects of changes in trade agreements and import competition on US employment and wages has focused primarily on non‐agricultural industries and changes in US import tariffs. We propose a method for measuring worker exposure to changes in agricultural tariffs using a newly developed county‐level dataset of employment ...

Are veterinary drug maximum residue limits protectionist? International evidence

open access: yesApplied Economic Perspectives and Policy, Volume 47, Issue 3, Page 1209-1231, July 2025.
Abstract We analyze the distribution of maximum residue limits (MRLs) on veterinary drugs used in animal production and aquaculture in a global context of food consumption and trade. We compare MRLs by drug‐product pairs for a large set of countries, commodities, and drugs.

Behaviour of Brown Bears Under Fluctuating Resource Availability

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 15, Issue 7, July 2025.
Using a 20‐year period of observations from different sources, this article examines the spatial and temporal patterns of beech masting in relation to brown bear movement and damage to livestock and human property. Standardised damages to beehive and livestock decreased during mast years, suggesting that bears met their trophic needs through natural ...

Enhancing performance of detection dog field surveys through experimental transects

open access: yesThe Journal of Wildlife Management, Volume 89, Issue 5, July 2025.
We evaluated performance parameters for a scat detection dog through assessment transects and compared these results with field survey data from the same dog‐team over a 4‐year period. From this, we derived valuable insights into the suitability of assessment transects for dog evaluation and how they can inform field performance.

Body Weight Estimation in Holstein × Zebu Crossbred Heifers: Comparative Analysis of XGBoost and LightGBM Algorithms

open access: yesVeterinary Medicine and Science, Volume 11, Issue 4, July 2025.
This study evaluated the effectiveness of XGBoost and LightGBM algorithms for the purpose of live weight estimation in Holstein × Zebu crossbred heifers. In the analysis performed with a large biometric dataset, both models provided high accuracy, with the XGBoost algorithm standing out with R2 = 0.999 in the training set and R2 = 0.986 in the test set.

Prevalence of Salmonella, Cryptosporidium and Leptospira in Invasive Pond Slider (Trachemys scripta) in North‐Western Italy

open access: yesVeterinary Medicine and Science, Volume 11, Issue 4, July 2025.
Natural lakes and ponds typically feature green areas where people engage in recreational and sporting activities. In Italy, these areas are often inhabited by non‐native freshwater turtles, even at high densities. However, freshwater turtles have been identified as natural carriers for various pathogens that can be transmitted to humans, making their ...
