Fixing Stochastic Dominance [PDF]

open access: yes
Decision theorists widely accept a stochastic dominance principle: roughly, if a risky prospect A is at least as probable as another prospect B to result in something at least as good, then A is at least as good as B.

Prediction of Surface Topography Parameters in Direct Laser Interference Patterning of Stainless Steel Using Infrared Monitoring and Convolutional Neural Networks

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This study presents an infrared monitoring approach for direct laser interference patterning (DLIP) combined with a convolutional neural network (CNN). Thermal emission data captured during structuring are used to predict surface topography parameters.

Air‐Pressure–Actuated Vibroacoustic Metamaterial With Tunable Bandgap: Design, Modeling, and Characterization

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This article presents the design, modeling, and characterization of air‐pressure–actuated programmable vibroacoustic metamaterials (PVAMM). The study focuses on leveraging air pressure to dynamically tune resonance frequencies for effective noise attenuation.

Composition‐Tuned Enhancement of the Anomalous Nernst Effect in FeCo–Pt Thin Films on Rigid and Flexible Substrates

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Disordered (Fe50Co50)1−xPtx thin films exhibit a pronounced anomalous Nernst effect (ANE) with a strong composition dependence on both rigid and flexible substrates. The transverse thermoelectric response peaks near 22.5 at.% Pt, accompanied by enhanced αxy/σxy scaling, thermal transport, and ANE sensitivity.

Dominance Conditionals and the Newcomb Problem [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
The dominance conditional 'If I drink the contents of cup A, I will drink more than if drink the contents of cup B' is true if we know that the first cup contains more than the second.

The Dutch premium principle

open access: yes, 1992
A premium principle is derived, in which the loading for a risk is the reinsurance loading for an excess-of-loss cover. It is shown that the principle is well-behaved in the sense that it results in larger premiums for risks that are larger in stop-loss ...

Evaluating Energy Absorption Performance of Filled Lattice Structures

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Maximum stress must be considered to robustly evaluate energy absorber designs. This approach was applied to compare all types of absorbers in a single Ashby diagram and determine the utility of filling lattice voids with a second material. High‐performance fillers can improve the performance of lattices that are limited by buckling or catastrophic ...

Towards Defect Phase Diagrams: From Research Data Management to Automated Workflows

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
A research data management infrastructure is presented for the systematic integration of heterogeneous experimental and simulation data required for defect phase diagrams. The approach combines openBIS with a companion application for large‐object storage, automated metadata extraction, provenance tracking and federated data access, thereby supporting ...

Dominance, Expected Utility Maximization, Inclusion, and Infinite Utility

open access: yes, 2021
I argue that the following three decision-theoretic principles are inconsistent with the assumption that there are options with infinite expected utility: (1) the principle of expected utility maximization that given a collection of options, you should ...
