Monotonicity, dominance and the Pareto principle

Economics Letters, 1994
Abstract We examine the implications of three similar criteria that are commonly used in welfare economics and the analysis of inequality and poverty - income dominance, monotonicity and the Pareto principle - within the context of income-distribution comparisons.

Sequential dominance and the anti-aggregation principle

Philosophical Studies, 2014
According to the widely held anti-aggregation principle, it is wrong to save a larger number of people from minor harms rather than a smaller number from much more serious harms. This principle is a central part of many influential and anti-utilitarian ethical theories.

A note on Bernoulli's principle and probability dominance

Journal of Optimization Theory and Applications, 1985
The concept of \(\beta\)-dominance proposed by \textit{C. Wrather} and \textit{P. L. Yu} [ibid. 36, 315-334 (1982; Zbl 0452.90007)] is shown to be not equivalent to that of expected utilities, which depend on the chosen alternative and the not chosen alternative.

Prolate over oblate dominance in deformed nuclei as a consequence of the SU(3) symmetry and the Pauli principle

open access: yesEuropean Physical Journal A, 2017
We show that the dominance of prolate over oblate shapes in even-even deformed nuclei can be derived from the SU(3) symmetry and the Pauli ...

Alleged Dominating Principles

2002
Abstract This chapter considers two other candidates for dominating principles: equality of resources and social convention. The advocate of equality of resources asks us to lift the totality of resources over which a property institution reigns out of its historical setting and to regard it as a cake sliceable into arithmetically equal ...

An Algorithm for Induction of Decision Rules Consistent with the Dominance Principle

2001
Induction of decision rules within the dominance-based rough set approach to the multiple-criteria sorting decision problem is discussed in this paper. We intoduce an algorithm called DOMLEM that induces a minimal set of generalized decision rules consistent with the dominance principle.
