T HE Dominican Republic, formerly known as Santo Domingo, occupies the eastern two-thirds of the Island of Hispafiola, which lies in the Caribbean Sea between Puerto Rico and Cuba. The other third of the island is occupied by the Republic of Haiti. The entire island is 19,325 square miles and has a population of two million.
