Residues R177 and S178 of the human Na+/H+ antiporter NHA2 are involved in its inhibition by the flavonoid phloretin

open access: yesFEBS Letters, Volume 599, Issue 6, Page 901-911, March 2025.
The human Na+/H+ antiporter NHA2 transports Na+ or Li+ in exchange for protons across cell membranes, and its dysfunction results in various pathologies, e.g., fertility disorders, hypertension, or diabetes. This work provides the molecular characterization of interactions of NHA2 with its specific inhibitor phloretin, which can be helpful for the ...

Blocking Complement Factor B Activation Reduces Renal Injury and Inflammation in a Rat Brain Death Model

open access: yesFrontiers in Immunology, 2019
Introduction: The majority of kidneys used for transplantation are retrieved from brain-dead organ donors. In brain death, the irreversible loss of brain functions results in hemodynamic instability, hormonal changes and immunological activation ...

A community‐based lung cancer rapid tissue donation protocol provides high‐quality drug‐resistant specimens for proteogenomic analyses

open access: yesCancer Medicine, 2020
Background For the advancement of cancer research, the collection of tissue specimens from drug‐resistant tumors after targeted therapy is crucial. Although patients with lung cancer are often provided targeted therapy, post‐therapy specimens are not ...

Estimating the Blood Supply Elasticity: Evidence from a Universal Scale Benefit Scheme [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2020
I estimate the semi-elasticity of blood donations with respect to a monetary benefit, namely the waiver of user fees when using the National Health Service, in Portugal. Using within-county variation over time in the value of the benefitI estimate both the unconditional elasticity, which captures overall response of the market, and the conditional ...

THE “NEW BODY SNATCHERS”: ANALYZING THE EFFECT OF PRESUMED CONSENT ORGAN DONATION LAWS ON PRIVACY, AUTONOMY, AND LIBERTY [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
This Note examines, in three parts, presumed consent laws as they pertain to organ donation. Part I discusses presumed consent and explains the salient features of presumed consent laws.

Cytosolic‐enhanced dark Epac‐based FRET sensors allow for intracellular cAMP detection in live cells via FLIM

open access: yesFEBS Letters, Volume 599, Issue 7, Page 1075-1085, April 2025.
We describe a novel set of Epac‐based FRET‐FLIM biosensors with improved fully cytosolic distribution, achieved without compromising the state‐of‐the‐art performance of our original designs, for detecting cAMP dynamics in real time in live cells with high precision and reliability.

Characterizing Bitcoin donations to open source software on GitHub [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2019
Web-based hosting services for version control, such as GitHub, have made it easier for people to develop, share, and donate money to software repositories. In this paper, we study the use of Bitcoin to make donations to open source repositories on GitHub.

Contract Development In A Matching Market: The Case of Kidney Exchange [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
We analyze a new transplant innovation — Advanced Donation, referred to by some as a kidney “gift certificate,” “layaway plan,” or “voucher — as a case study offering insights on both market and contract development. Advanced Donation provides an unusual

Diphthamide synthesis is linked to the eEF2‐client chaperone machinery

open access: yesFEBS Letters, Volume 599, Issue 9, Page 1260-1268, May 2025.
The diphthamide modification of eukaryotic translation elongation factor 2 (eEF2) is important for accurate protein synthesis. We addressed the potential coordination of de novo eEF2 synthesis with simultaneous or subsequent diphthamide modification. Our work reveals that the co‐chaperones Hgh1 and Cpr7, which are known to support folding of nascent ...
