Conjunctival bacterial and fungal flora in healthy donkeys in Central Italy [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
Introduction - The normal eye microflora is composed of several species of fungi and bacteria. If the ocular defense barriers become weak, they can act as pathogens and cause infections.

A Physiological Microfluidic Blood–Brain‐Barrier Model for In Vitro Study of Nanoparticle Trafficking and Accumulation

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
A human microfluidic blood‐brain barrier (mBBB) model enables spatially resolved comparison of nanoparticle trafficking. Extracellular vesicles (EVs), liposomes, and nanoplastics exhibit distinct transport and disruption behaviors, revealing that membrane composition and uptake pathways govern BBB interaction.

Christmas Lights... and the Light of Christmas

open access: yes, 1990
Excerpt: My views on the meaning of Christmas have undergone two major changes. The first came as a six-year-old when I realized that Santa Claus, reindeer, and Frosty the Snowman were different from baby Jesus, donkeys, and manger scenes.

The use of equine influenza pseudotypes for serological screening [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
Standard assays used for influenza serology present certain practical issues, such as inter-laboratory variability, complex protocols and the necessity for handling certain virus strains in high biological containment facilities.

Nitric Oxide‐Generating Poly (allylamine hydrochloride) Coating on Biomedical Titanium Implant

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Interfaces, EarlyView.
We report a metal‐free, nitric oxide (NO)‐generating coating in which poly(allylamine hydrochloride) (PAH) is covalently immobilized onto titanium. The coating catalyzes NO generation from the endogenous S‐nitrosothiol GSNO, retains activity after multiple reuse cycles and pH exposures, and maintains endothelial cell viability while modulating ...

Perfusion Bioreactor Culture Incorporating Mechanical Confinement Enhances Mesenchymal Stem Cell Extracellular Vesicle Production and Wound Healing Potential

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Technologies, EarlyView.
Scalable manufacturing challenges and limited potency remain two of the most intransigent issues limiting clinical translation of EV therapeutics. Mechanical cues can induce phenotypic changes and increased vesiculation in EV source cells without the use of extraneous reagents, chemicals, and/or cargo, thereby potentially drastically improving the ...

Prevalence of Neospora spp. in donkeys in China

open access: yesParasite, 2018
This study was conducted to detect specific anti-Neospora antibodies using a commercial competitive-inhibition ELISA kit, and to evaluate the risk factors for Neospora spp. infection.

Additive‐Manufactured, Multifunctional Bioreactor Technology for Dynamic Culture of 3D Bioprinted Tissue Models

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Technologies, EarlyView.
We introduce an additively manufactured bioreactor with a perfusion flow system and integrated temperature and pH sensors for skeletal muscle tissue biofabrication. The bioreactor's performance was evaluated by assessing the viability, spreading of the myoblast cells in a printed scaffold, and contraction of the isolated murine musculi interossei ...

Matching in Rural Producer Organizations [PDF]

open access: yes
Using a rich dataset from West Africa we study the determinants of membership in rural producer organizations (RPO). We ...nd that on average it is the more fortunate members of rural society who belong in RPOs. In Senegal, the dominant criteria are land
