Wind infrared Doppler lidar instrument

Optical Engineering, 2001
The purpose of the project WIND (wind infrared Doppler lidar) is the development of an airborne conical scanning CO2 Doppler lidar in French-German cooperation by CNRS/CNES and DLR. The instrument and its peculiarities are described. Measurements of the Doppler shift from a moving platform with an accuracy of 1 m/s require instantaneous access to the ...

Tropospheric Wind Profiling with Doppler Lidar

Proceedings of European Meeting on Lasers and Electro-Optics CLEOE-96, 1996
A coherent Doppler LIDAR system for remote sensing of atmospheric winds has been developed by Kayser-Threde GmbH. The system is devoted for meteorological airport surveillance and for atmospheric research studies. A diode- pumped Tm:YAG laser system generates eye-safe laser pulses with 3 mJ output energy, 600 nsec duration (full width half maximum FWHM)

Doppler lidar atmospheric wind sensor: reevaluation of a 355-nm incoherent Doppler lidar

Applied Optics, 1990
We reevaluate the performance of an incoherent Doppler lidar system operating at 354.7 nm, based on recent but well-proven Nd:YAG laser technology and currently available optical sensors. For measurements in the lower troposphere, up to ~5 km altitude, and also in the Junge-layer of the lower stratosphere, a wind component accuracy of +/- 2 m/s and a ...

Doppler lidar wind measurement on Eos

Earth Observing Systems Conference, 1985
A polar-orbiting platform segment of the Earth Observing System (EOS) could carry a CO2-laser based Doppler lidar for recording global wind profiles. Development goals would include the manufacture of a 10 J laser with a 2 yr operational life, space-rating the optics and associated software, and the definition of models for global aerosol distributions.

ALADIN doppler wind lidar: recent advances

SPIE Proceedings, 2007
The Atmospheric Laser Doppler Instrument (ALADIN) is the payload of the ADM-Aeolus mission, which will provide direct measurements of global wind fields. It will determine the wind velocity component normal to the satellite velocity vector. The instrument is a direct detection Doppler Lidar operating in the UV, which will be the first of its kind in ...

Wind Sensing Doppler LIDAR, Improving Wind Turbines

2010
In recent years, the focus on alternative energy has grown and with that the interest in optimizing of known alternative energy sources. It has been shown by Catch The Wind inc. that wind sensing Doppler LIDAR mounted on a wind turbine can be used to optimize the performance of wind turbines up to 10%.

Airborne Doppler lidar wind measurements

Conference Digest. 2000 Conference on Lasers and Electro-Optics Europe (Cat. No.00TH8505), 2000
Summary form only given. Study of the atmospheric wind field is fundamental for the understanding and prediction of the weather development. To overcome the spatial limitations of ground based observations, airborne measurements are recognised as excellent tools to study atmospheric processes.

Dual-frequency Doppler-lidar method of wind measurement

Applied Optics, 1980
In this new method [dual-frequency Doppler-lidar (DFDL)] of remote wind sensing, two optical beams of unlike frequency are superimposed in the sensed volume. The velocity information is obtained from the difference in the Doppler shifts of light scattered from the two beams by aerosols moving with the air.

Airborne Doppler Lidar Wind Field Measurements

Bulletin of the American Meteorological Society, 1984
A coherent Doppler lidar has been used in an aircraft to measure the two-dimensional wind field in a number of different atmospheric situations. The lidar, a pulsed CO2 system, was installed in the NASA Convair 990, Galileo II, and flown in a summer field program that included flights in California, in Oklahoma at the National Severe Storms Laboratory,

Doppler lidar for tropospheric wind measurements

SPIE Proceedings, 1992
A ground-based Doppler wind lidar for tropospheric wind speed measurement is being developed for environmental applications such as pollutants distribution studies and climatology investigations preceding the choice of sites for power plants and factories. This paper gives a short overview on specifications and design concepts of the system and reports
