Coherent Doppler lidar for measurements of wind fields
Proceedings of the IEEE, 1989The signal-processing techniques for obtaining the velocity estimates and the fundamental factors that influence coherent lidar performance are considered. The similarities and distinctions between Doppler lidar and Doppler radars are discussed. The capability of coherent Doppler lidars for mapping wind fields over selected regions in the lower ...

Future Space-Based Doppler Wind Lidar Winds
2021 IEEE International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium IGARSS, 2021The unique European Space Agency (ESA) Earth Explorer Aeolus Doppler Wind Lidar (DWL) is a success with beneficial impacts in weather and climate. At the IGARSS ‘21 venue we will share our results internationally and present initial studies that look into an operational Aeolus follow-on mission and describe lessons learned on the instrument, data ...

Wind lidars use the optical Doppler effect to measure atmospheric wind with high spatial and temporal resolution. In contrast to scalar quantities, such as temperature or humidity, the atmospheric wind is a vector quantity consisting of three components – usually referred to as vertical wind speed, horizontal wind speed, and the horizontal direction ...

Wind infrared Doppler lidar instrument
Optical Engineering, 2001The purpose of the project WIND (wind infrared Doppler lidar) is the development of an airborne conical scanning CO2 Doppler lidar in French-German cooperation by CNRS/CNES and DLR. The instrument and its peculiarities are described. Measurements of the Doppler shift from a moving platform with an accuracy of 1 m/s require instantaneous access to the ...

Tropospheric Wind Profiling with Doppler Lidar
Proceedings of European Meeting on Lasers and Electro-Optics CLEOE-96, 1996A coherent Doppler LIDAR system for remote sensing of atmospheric winds has been developed by Kayser-Threde GmbH. The system is devoted for meteorological airport surveillance and for atmospheric research studies. A diode- pumped Tm:YAG laser system generates eye-safe laser pulses with 3 mJ output energy, 600 nsec duration (full width half maximum FWHM)

Doppler lidar atmospheric wind sensor: reevaluation of a 355-nm incoherent Doppler lidar
Applied Optics, 1990We reevaluate the performance of an incoherent Doppler lidar system operating at 354.7 nm, based on recent but well-proven Nd:YAG laser technology and currently available optical sensors. For measurements in the lower troposphere, up to ~5 km altitude, and also in the Junge-layer of the lower stratosphere, a wind component accuracy of +/- 2 m/s and a ...

Mission profiles for the proposed Doppler lidar WIND
Coherent Laser Radar: Technology and Applications, 1991During phase A of the development of the airborne pulsed CO2 laser-Doppler system WIND [1] a lot of scientific objectives were studied. The intension for the airborne system is — to use it for wind field measurements— to use the experience during the development and test phase for further development of a spaccborne lidar.

Airborne Doppler lidar wind measurements
Conference Digest. 2000 Conference on Lasers and Electro-Optics Europe (Cat. No.00TH8505), 2000Summary form only given. Study of the atmospheric wind field is fundamental for the understanding and prediction of the weather development. To overcome the spatial limitations of ground based observations, airborne measurements are recognised as excellent tools to study atmospheric processes.

Doppler lidar wind measurement on Eos
Earth Observing Systems Conference, 1985A polar-orbiting platform segment of the Earth Observing System (EOS) could carry a CO2-laser based Doppler lidar for recording global wind profiles. Development goals would include the manufacture of a 10 J laser with a 2 yr operational life, space-rating the optics and associated software, and the definition of models for global aerosol distributions.

Vertical wind velocity measurements by a Doppler lidar and comparisons with a Doppler sodar
Applied Optics, 1981A Doppler lidar based on a single frequency Ar(+) laser and a spherical Fabry-Perot interferometer is used to study the vertical velocity field in the planetary boundary layer. The wind velocity information is obtained by spectral analysis of the aerosol backscatter.
