Effects of Feeding Different Diets on Carcass Performance and Mutton Quality of Horro Sheep

open access: yesFood Science &Nutrition, Volume 13, Issue 9, September 2025.
Different feeding options affect Horro sheep meat quality. Horro sheep with a high‐quality diet can produce high‐quality meat. Dolichos lablab can be used as an alternative protein source for Horro sheep fattening. ABSTRACT The study evaluated the carcass performances and meat quality of yearling Horro rams with an initial body weight of 25.35 ± 2.34 ...

A consideration of resistance and tolerance for ruminant nematode infections [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
Debates on the relative merits of resistance (the ability of the host to control the parasite lifecycle) and tolerance (the net impact of infection on host performance) are often lively and unhindered by data or evidence.

Revolutionizing Veterinary Medicine: The Role of Nanoparticles in Advancing Animal Health, Nutrition and Disease Management

open access: yesVeterinary Medicine and Science, Volume 11, Issue 5, September 2025.
Nanoparticles are transforming animal care by enhancing nutrition, drug delivery and disease prevention. This study highlights their role in improving nutrient absorption in livestock, facilitating targeted drug delivery and boosting vaccine efficacy. Additionally, nanoparticles effectively reduce harmful mycotoxins in animal feeds, promoting overall ...

Effect of Astragalus mollissimus on Ruminal Fermentation, Methane Production and Performance of Sheep

open access: yesVeterinary Medicine and Science, Volume 11, Issue 3, May 2025.
The effects of A. mollissimus (AM) supplementation on methane (CH4) production, volatile fatty acids, animal performance and nitro compound presence in blood were evaluated through two experiments. Results showed an CH4 reduction by up to 60%. No adverse effects on animal performance and no detectable nitro compound in plasma were reported.

Unveiling the Pre‐Weaning Growth Performance and Some Reproductive Characteristics of Akkaraman and Central Anatolian Merino Sheep

open access: yesVeterinary Medicine and Science, Volume 11, Issue 2, March 2025.
This study evaluates growth and reproductive traits in Akkaraman (AKK) and Central Anatolian Merino (CAM) sheep in Türkiye. AKK lambs showed higher birth weights but lower weaning weights and growth rates compared to CAM lambs. Significant non‐genetic factors, such as sex, birth type and dam age, influenced these traits.

The heart remembers : observations of cardiac memory in the Dorper sheep heart

open access: yesOnderstepoort J Vet Res, 2003
Memory is a property common to a diverse range of tissues. Cardiac memory has been demonstrated in the human, dog, rat and rabbit. This is a peculiar phenomenon, reflected in the T wave of the electrocardiogram. The heart is able to remember periods of alterations in the sequence of ventricular activation and once there is a return to a normal ...

Integration analysis of transcriptome and proteome of Chinese Merino sheep (Ovis aries) embryonic skeletal muscle

open access: yesAnimal Research and One Health, Volume 3, Issue 1, Page 129-142, February 2025.
This study aimed to explore the molecular mechanism of sheep late fetal skeletal muscle development from proliferation to hypertrophy. We performed the comprehensive analysis of transcriptome and proteome of Chinese Merino sheep at embryonic ages Day85 (D85N), Day105 (D105N) and Day135 (D135N) by the tandem mass tags (TMT) and RNA‐seq methods. We found

High fluoride and low calcium levels in drinking water is associated with low bone mass, reduced bone quality and fragility fractures in sheep [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
SUMMARY: Chronic environmental fluoride exposure under calcium stress causes fragility fractures due to osteoporosis and bone quality deterioration, at least in sheep.

History and genetic diversity of African sheep: Contrasting phenotypic and genomic diversity

open access: yesAnimal Genetics, Volume 56, Issue 1, February 2025.
Abstract Domesticated sheep have adapted to contrasting and extreme environments and continue to play important roles in local community‐based economies throughout Africa. Here we review the Neolithic migrations of thin‐tailed sheep and the later introductions of fat‐tailed sheep into eastern Africa.
