Dose distributions using kilovoltage x-rays and dose enhancement from iodine contrast agents
Physics in Medicine and Biology, 1999In x-ray phototherapy of brain tumours, the tumour is loaded with iodine and exposed to kilovoltage x-rays. Due to the high photoelectric cross sections of iodine, substantial photoelectric interactions occur. The flux of photoelectrons, characteristic x-rays and Auger electrons produce a localized dose enhancement.

Gadolinium dose enhancement studies in microbeam radiation therapy.
Medical physics, 2009Microbeam radiation therapy (MRT) is an innovative technique to treat brain tumors. The synchrotron generated x-ray beam, used for the treatment, is collimated and delivered in an array of narrow micrometer-sized planar rectangular fields. Several preclinical experiments performed at the Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) and at the European ...

Low doses of radiation can enhance insect lifespans
Biogerontology, 2013This paper assesses the capacity of ionizing radiation to extend the lifespans of experimental insect models based on the peer-reviewed literature. Ionizing radiation biphasically affects the lifespans of adult males and females for a broad range of insect models with high doses reducing lifespan whereas lower doses can enhance lifespan, typically in ...

Standardized gentamicin dosing enhances peak serum concentrations.
Clinical and investigative medicine. Medecine clinique et experimentale, 1996The objectives of this study were to determine if a standardized gentamicin dosing protocol would improve clinical effectiveness, yield higher peak serum concentrations, and improve the success rate of attaining peaks in the desired range when compared with empiric dosing practices used by prescribers.
