Adjustment and control of double reeds for direct blown early instruments

Early Music, 1980
So where do you get good reeds to suit your instrument ? You've tried, failed, and maybe even been told by some annoying creature with a glib smirk of superiority: 'You've got to make your own'. That can be a very daunting and unhelpful remark for someone who is already trying to find enough time to practise.

How to get the best from direct-blown double reeds

Early Music, 1982
John Hanchet's article on the adjustment of double reeds (EM July 80 pp.361-5) underlines what is certainly the greatest problem of all double-reed players: the reed itself. A good reed will make a poor instrument sound better than it is, and a poor reed will make even a top-quality instrument sound deficient.

Audio performance comparison and analysis across double reed materials, performance spaces, articulation and rhythmic variability, and melodic scales

The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America
Bassoon reeds, commonly constructed with Arundo donax, frequently contain inconsistent audio and structural performance due to their natural degradation from saliva and humidity exposure. Though a necessary tool for sound production, reeds are reported to be an expensive recurring cost which creates a financial obstacle for musicians.

Modeling tip displacement in double reeds using dual beam frameworks

The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America
While much work has been done towards investigating reed tip displacement for single reeds, few models exist for double reeds. Such a gap in literature has prompted the need for developing coupled multiphysics frameworks to help musicians understand how factors such as age, material stiffness and blade thickness affect tip displacement and sound ...
