Functional Hydrogel for Modulating Lipid Droplets and Neuroinflammation in Head Injury

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
After TBI, elevated cholesterol levels in activated microglia lead to the accumulation of cholesterol esters in lipid droplets, exacerbating neuroinflammation. A β‐cyclodextrin‐conjugated GelMA (βCD‐GelMA) hydrogel is developed to promotes cholesterol efflux and reduces LDL influx, thereby alleviating intracellular cholesterol and lipid droplet buildup.

Double blinding in peer review: is it worth the hype?

open access: yesUniversity of Ottawa Journal of Medicine, 2014
INTRODUCTION Without a doubt, peer review is the measuring stick by which science is judged. Peer review is a longstanding tradition in academic circles as the standard practice for evaluating articles for publication, grants and academic promotions. The

Engineering Topographical Cues to Enhance Neural Regeneration in Spinal Cord Injury: Overcoming Challenges and Advancing Therapies

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Spinal cord injury (SCI) poses significant challenges for regeneration due to a series of secondary injury mechanisms. How to use biomaterial approach to target the failed regeneration after SCI remains a critical challenge. This review systematically evaluates current strategies to optimize biomaterial topographies for neurite outgrowth, axonal ...

Experimenter bias across gender differences [PDF]

open access: yes
This paper reports on a laboratory study that examined the influence of experimenter bias in the investment game. Specifically we explored the effect of changing the gender of the experimenter and compared it with the double blind treatment. Our findings

Polaronic and Electrochemical Signatures in Group IVB (Ti, Zr, Hf) Oxides: Unified SKP–DFT Insights for Tunable Transport in Energy and Electronic Devices

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Charge carrier concentration and mobility in TiO2, ZrO2, and HfO2 powder films are experimentally mapped as a function of temperature. The results uncover polaron‐mediated transport regimes and field‐activated conduction, enabling the design of oxide‐based electronic and energy devices with thermally tunable functionality.

Bioinspired Design of a Wet‐Adhesive Cornea Glue Based on Recombinant Human Protein Networks

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Natures protein‐based high performance materials e.g. elastin, silk and muscle proteins have been mimicked by a new protein‐hybrid material based on redesigned human partial sequences only, showing high wet‐adhesiveness and elasticity for biomedical applications.

Aspartame sensitivity? A double blind randomised crossover study.

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2015
BackgroundAspartame is a commonly used intense artificial sweetener, being approximately 200 times sweeter than sucrose. There have been concerns over aspartame since approval in the 1980s including a large anecdotal database reporting severe symptoms ...

Double-Blind but More Transparent [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Peace Research, 2002
Journal of Peace Research has now introduced `double-blind' or `masked' review procedures. In other words, the author's name and affiliation are removed from the manuscript. This article explains why we make this change now, why we did not make it before, and why the decision was not obvious. The main argument in favor of blinding is that the reviewer
