Effects of the 1997-1998 El Niño and 1998-1999 La Niña events on breeding waterbirds and sea lions in the Upper Gulf of California, México [PDF]

open access: yesGeofísica Internacional, 2003
During 1998 and 1999 I monitored waterbirds nesting on Isla San Jorge, at La Purinera and on Isla Montague, in the northern Gulf of California, as well as sea lions on Isla San Jorge. During El Niño the brown boobies on San Jorge ceased breeding and left

Recent Advances in Light‐Addressable Electrochemistry for Spatially Resolved Applications

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Technologies, EarlyView.
This comprehensive review highlights light‐addressable electrochemistry as a powerful tool that uses light to control localized chemical reactions on unstructured semiconductor surfaces. The work evaluates advanced strategies to optimize electrode materials for enhanced spatial resolution and stability. Furthermore, it showcases diverse applications in

Advancing breeding phenology does not affect incubation schedules in chestnut‐crowned babblers: Opposing effects of temperature and wind

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, 2018
Projecting population responses to climate change requires an understanding of climatic impacts on key components of reproduction. Here, we investigate the associations among breeding phenology, climate and incubation schedules in the chestnut‐crowned ...

Double-breasting employee voice : an assessment of motives, arrangements and durability [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
This article explores employee voice within the specific institutional arrangement of double-breasting. Double-breasting is when multi-plant organisations recognise trade unions in some company sites, with non-union arrangements at other company plants ...

A Pentaradial and Bilateral Combined Photoreception System in the Sea Cucumber is Mediated by a Blue Light‐Sensitive R‐Opsin

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
The sea cucumber Holothuria leucospilota detects blue and adjacent wavelengths of light via an r‐opsin with a maximum absorption at 459 nm. In the oral tentacles, papillae, and tube feet, distinct light‐sensing structures with specialized morphologies are formed, constituting a unique pentaradial and bilateral combined photoreception system.

Phase‐Resolved Dual Control of Phenol Photodissociation at the Air–Water Interface From Structure‐Resolved Statistics

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Faster phenol photolysis at the air–water interface arises from two cooperative factors: a more favorable initial microenvironment for solvent‐side electron stabilization, which lowers CI access, and a more labile hydrogen‐bond network, which more readily reorganizes to stabilize the dark‐state intermediate.

Light‐Enhanced Chloride Transport by Thiourea‐Appended Molecular Motor

open access: yesAngewandte Chemie, EarlyView.
A molecular motor functionalized with a thiourea anion‐binding motif mediates transmembrane chloride transport. Light irradiation enhances transport efficiency by populating a more active metastable isomer, which slowly equilibrates to the initial stable isomer.

Alternative Comedy Timeline

open access: yes, 2022
This chapter takes the form of a timeline that charts the development of alternative comedy from its precursors in 1960s and 1970s fringe theatre, to its beginnings in 1979–1980 with the opening of the Comedy Store in Soho, London, and the formation of ...

The Preparatory (Anti)Bonding Character of Molecular Orbitals

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Herein, a concept to qualitatively predict changes in bond dissociation energies upon reduction or oxidation of molecular compounds is introduced. Changing the population of so‐called preparatory molecular orbitals influences how molecular fragments are relaxing after bond cleavage, which is shown for isolated organometallic aluminum compounds as well ...

Deprotonation and Alkylation of Weakly Acidic C(sp3)─H Bonds Through In Situ Generation of a Strong Hydride Base From 1,1,3,3‐Tetramethyldisiloxane and Potassium tert‐Butoxide

open access: yesAngewandte Chemie, EarlyView.
The use of 1,1,3,3‐tetramethyldisiloxane (TMDSO) and potassium tert‐butoxide enables direct alkylation of weakly acidic carbon–hydrogen bonds with alkyl halides. Experimental and computational studies support the formation of a substrate‐associated hydride‐like base, providing a single‐step alternative to the classical deprotonation and electrophile ...
