Acoustical comparison between decrescendo calls of female mallards and mimicry by humans using artificial duck calls

open access: yesWildlife Society Bulletin, 2013
Female mallards (Anas platyrhynchos) emit a diverse repertoire of vocalizations. Duck hunters and callers mimic these vocalizations using artificial calls made from wood or plastic.

Development of a Bispecific Antibody Targeting CD30 and CD137 on Hodgkin and Reed-Sternberg Cells

open access: yesFrontiers in Oncology, 2019
Hodgkin Lymphoma (HL) is a malignancy that frequently affects young adults. Although, there are effective treatments not every patient responds, necessitating the development of novel therapeutic approaches, especially for relapsed and refractory cases ...

On the bore-to-driver feedback in double-reed conical woodwinds [PDF]

open access: yesThe Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, 1988
The nonlinear behavior of double-reed drivers makes advisable the use of time domain to study bore-to-driver feedback. The characteristic trends of the impulse response of a conical woodwind are revised. The low intensity of the reflection coming from the first open hole shows the essential role that Bernoulli pressure plays in the reed self-sustained ...

Oxygels: Tunable Phosphorescent Hydrogels for Cherenkov‐Excited Luminescence Imaging (CELI) of Oxygen

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
Biocompatible hydrogels with covalently embedded near‐infrared phosphorescent probes enable local tissue pO2 quantification by means of Cherenkov‐excited luminescence imaging (CELI), where optical excitation occurs within tissues upon irradiation with high‐energy electron beams.

Influence of ensiling wheat straw with addition of fermented juice of lactic acid bacteria on changes in structural carbohydrates and nutritive value [PDF]

open access: yesTikrit Journal for Agricultural Sciences
This study was carried out to investigate the effect of ensiling wheat straw (WS) with addition of fermented juice of lactic acid bacteria (FJLB) prepared from wild reed plant with different sources and levels of soluble carbohydrates on changes in ...

Risk of Obstructive Sleep Apnea Lower in Double Reed Wind Musicians [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Clinical Sleep Medicine, 2012
Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is caused by a collapse of the upper airway. Respiratory muscle training with a wind instrument (didgeridoo) in patients with moderate OSA has been previously shown to improve OSA symptomology. However, a survey of orchestra members did not indicate a difference in OSA risk between wind and non-wind instrumentalist.

Strong Photoluminescence Enhancement in All‐Dielectric Ge Thin Film Metasurfaces for Integration on the Si Platform

open access: yesAdvanced Optical Materials, EarlyView.
Germanium (Ge) all‐dielectric metasurfaces can be leveraged to strongly enhance the radiative emission from Ge layers grown on silicon‐on‐insulator substrates by industry‐standard processes. At room‐temperature, the narrowband photoluminescence (PL) intensity is enhanced by a factor ∼40× with respect to unstructured films.
