Stress concentration around dowel bars in jointed rigid concrete pavements

open access: yes, 2001
In this study, the magnitude and state of stresses induced around dowel bars were identified through detailed 3D Finite Element (3DFE) modeling of dowel jointed rigid pavement structures.

Hydrodynamic and ecological effects of engineered logjams: Insights from field observations

open access: yesEarth Surface Processes and Landforms, Volume 51, Issue 6, June 2026.
Drone imaging, LSPIV and electrofishing data quantified restoration effects of engineered logjam at the Emme River (Switzerland). Placement and discharge shaped flow: Side jams created longer wakes, centre jams stronger mixing; and lower discharge intensified gap velocities, whereas wake length remained stable.

Laboratory Study of Structural Behavior of Alternative Dowel Bars;TR-510, April 2006

open access: yes, 2006
Load transfer across transverse joints has always been a factor contributing to the useful life of concrete pavements. For many years, round steel dowels have been the conventional load transfer mechanism.

Quantification of ground surface movements on sorted circles using time‐lapse structure‐from‐motion photogrammetry in a karst cave, Slovenia

open access: yesEarth Surface Processes and Landforms, Volume 51, Issue 6, June 2026.
We present ground surface movements on sorted circles in a karst cave using time‐lapse photogrammetry with accuracies of up to ±2 mm. Data with 3‐hourly resolution revealed average vertical movements of up to 50 mm and horizontal movements of up to 15 mm during individual freeze–thaw cycles.

Field Evaluation of Elliptical Fiber Reinforced Polymer Dowel Performance, June 2003

open access: yes, 2003
Fiber composite materials (FRP) are making an entry into the construction market in both buildings and pavements. The application to pavements comes in the form of joint reinforcement (dowels and tie bars) to date.

Construction and Evaluation of a Ballistic Gelatin‐Based Simulator for Transcervical Chorionic Villus Sampling

open access: yesJournal of Ultrasound in Medicine, Volume 45, Issue 6, Page 1297-1306, June 2026.
Chorionic villus sampling (CVS) is a crucial prenatal diagnostic tool, but a declining number of procedures makes training a challenge. Here we describe a transcervical CVS simulator made from ballistic gelatin. Ninety‐three Maternal‐Fetal Medicine providers used the simulators during hands‐on workshops and completed surveys regarding their fidelity ...

Determination of bending moment resistance of t-type joints constructed with wood biscuit [PDF]

open access: yesIranian Journal of Wood and Paper Industries, 2014
The goal of this study was to investigate effects of wood species (Beech and Fir), number of connectors (1 and 2), size of biscuit (10 and 20) and type of adhesives (Polyvinyl acetate (PVAc), polyurethane (PU) and urea-formaldehyde (UF)) on bending ...

Study on the tensile strength of ready-to-assemble and fixed corner joints on medium density fiberboard [PDF]

open access: yesIranian Journal of Wood and Paper Industries, 2012
In this research measurement and comparison of tensile strength of disassemble and fixed joints made with members out of MDF were investigated. Experimental joints were made with connectors, such as hardware pieces, elite, dowel, screws and biscuits ...

Experimental evaluation of dowel-type timber joints with wooden dowels

open access: yesProceedings of the Institution of Civil Engineers - Structures and Buildings, 2020
Dowel-type timber joints made of wood are of particular interest for interventions on built heritage because such heritage buildings often involve timber structures. Wooden dowels offer a lower cost when compared with other connectors and conform to the tendency for using wood-based solutions to retrofit timber structures.
