Zig-zag rotational dowel welding for exterior wood joints
Journal of Adhesion Science and Technology, 2007Azig-zag pattern of rotationally welded dowels across the interface of a butt joint between two wood planks was shown to yield strong joints without any adhesive. Tests after 2 h in boiling water showed that the joints were able to resist both 2 h immersion in boiling water, as well as the subsequent oven drying.

Application of Numerical Modelling to Dowel-Welded Wood Joints
Journal of Adhesion Science and Technology, 2010Numerical models using a 3-D finite element analysis method and the behaviour of dowel-welded wood joints are presented. Simulation results for step butt wood joints with two welded wood dowels under shear are analyzed and a good agreement with the experimental results is shown. Anisotropic elasto-plastic constitutive law with hardening associated with

Dowel design of the shear plate dowel joint
Engineering Structures, 2020Abstract The shear plate dowel joint (SPDJ) is a novel connection design for heavy timber structures. The connection uses a single large diameter dowel and glued-on steel plates to transfer loads between members. Consequently, the design of the dowel is of great influence for the global performance of the connection.

Dowel Type Joints in Agglomerated Wood
Advanced Materials Research, 2014The objectives of this paper are base characteristics of single-shear joints in elements of agglomerated wood. These characteristics (deformation and embedment strength) are determined on the basis of destructive laboratory testing (proceeded according to valid standards for destructive laboratory testing).

Stiffness of scarf joints with dowels
Computers & Structures, 2018Abstract Repairs to historical timber structures include connecting existing beams and new beams. Older ways of making the connection need to be used to ensure authenticity of the beam. In most cases, e.g. floor structures, the second limit state – serviceability – is of decisive importance.

Weather exposure durability of welded dowel joints
Holz als Roh- und Werkstoff, 2007A zigzag pattern of rotationally welded dowels across the interface of a butt joint between two wood planks, without any adhesive, was shown to yield joints presenting some resistance to weather exposure, although not of exterior grade type.

Tarsometatarsal Joint Arthrodesis with Trephine Joint Resection and Dowel Calcaneal Bone Graft
The Journal of Foot and Ankle Surgery, 2014Arthritis of the tarsometatarsal joints is a challenging problem to treat. It can cause chronic foot pain and functional disability. We present a surgical technique for tarsometatarsal joint arthrodesis using a trephine to resect the articular surfaces and a dowel plug of an autogenous calcaneal graft with locking plate fixation. The procedure has been

Peg and Dowel Fusion of the Proximal Interphalangeal Joint
Foot & Ankle, 1980The clawtoe or hammertoe deformity is frequently encountered in office practice. The etiology of this condition remains obscure, although intrinsic atrophy or imbalance was suspected as early as 1863 by Duchenne. Arthrodesing the proximal interphalangeal joint converts the more powerful flexor tendon to a flexor of the metatarsophalangeal joint ...

High‐performance dowel‐type joints for timber structures
Progress in Structural Engineering and Materials, 2003AbstractThis paper identifies the fundamental factors that affect the performance of dowel‐type joints between structural timber members. It considers methods that have been used to enhance joint performance and illustrates how these have been brought together in two alternative high‐performance joints.

Performance of Dowel-Welded Wood Furniture Linear Joints
Journal of Adhesion Science and Technology, 2009Comparison of three types of furniture joints such as scarf joints, step butt joints and dovetail joints held together either by one or two welded dowels, glued dowels and steel nails showed that the dowels always gave better shear strength and greater stiffness than the steel nails.
