Feedback control for penetrating a downburst

Guidance, Navigation and Control Conference, 1987
Feedback logic is given that produces satisfactory penetration of an aircraft through a severe downburst. The logic has two parts: (1) A switch that calls for full throttle and tight climb-rate-hold feedback logic when the magnitude of headwind-rate exceeds a threshold level; this switch stays on until re-set by the pilot after penetration of the ...

A Numerical Study of a Rotating Downburst

Journal of the Atmospheric Sciences, 1993
Abstract Previous studies have revealed that convective storms often contain intense small-scale downdrafts, termed “downbursts,” that are a significant hazard to aviation. These downbursts sometimes possess strong rotation about their vertical axis in the lower and middle levels of the storm, but studies of how this rotation is produced and how it ...

Downbursts from Innocuous Clouds: An Example

Weather and Forecasting, 1991
Abstract A microburst occurred at Goodland, Kansas, on 4 March 1990. This event was unique in the sense that it occurred at 0348 AM MST (1048 UTC) and produced 14°F (7.8°C) of warming. The environment along the High Plains exhibited characteristics similar to those associated with dry microbursts documented in the literature.

Leonardo da Vinci and the Downburst

Bulletin of the American Meteorological Society, 1990
Abstract Evidence from the drawings, experiments, and writings of Leonardo da Vinci are presented to demonstrate that da Vinci recognized and, possibly, discovered the downburst and understood its associated airflow. Other early references to vortex flows resembling downbursts are mentioned.
