Evaluation of Peak Transmission Line Conductor Reactions Under Downburst Winds Using Optimization and Simplified Approaches

open access: yesFrontiers in Built Environment, 2019
Transmission line structures, though designed per code provisions, have suffered several failures worldwide in the past. As reported in the body of the available literature, more than 80% of those failures are due to severe localized wind events such as ...

Numerical Study of the Flow Characteristics of Downburst-like Wind over the 3D Hill Using Different Turbulence Models

open access: yesApplied Sciences, 2023
With the rapid development of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) technology, it has been widely used to study the wind field characteristics of downbursts in mountainous areas.

Horizontal Anisotropy of Turbulent Fluctuations in Surface and Air Temperatures Over a Flat, Homogeneous Surface

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Atmospheres, Volume 130, Issue 24, 28 December 2025.
Abstract Longitudinal Lx $\left({L}_{x}\right)$ and lateral Ly $\left({L}_{y}\right)$ integral length scales describe the characteristic horizontal structure of energy‐containing turbulent structures in a flow. The ratio Lx/Ly ${L}_{x}/{L}_{y}$ describes the anisotropy of the structures where Lx/Ly>1 ${L}_{x}/{L}_{y} > 1$ indicates structures elongated

The impact of catastrophic forest blowdown on large wood loads in headwater streams

open access: yesEarth Surface Processes and Landforms, Volume 50, Issue 15, December 2025.
Catastrophic forest blowdown across parts of southeastern Australia in June 2021 substantially increased large wood loads in headwater streams, delivering 88% of the measured wood volume. Wood loads did not correlate to blowdown density but instead were significantly influenced by valley morphology, such that wider valley bottoms had higher wood loads.

Evaluating the Impact of the Planetary Boundary Layer on Dynamics of Urban Thunderstorms Over the Eastern Indian Region

open access: yesMeteorological Applications, Volume 32, Issue 6, November/December 2025.
Higher Turbulent Kinetic Energy in YSU indicates strong turbulence in the boundary layer (thick black curved arrows) resulting in the exchange of turbulent fluxes to the upper atmosphere through strong updrafts (Red arrows), making the atmosphere saturated, aiding the realistic prediction of rainfall associated with thunderstorms compared to MYJ and ...

An observational study of a circular gust front over the Yangtze Delta, China

open access: yesWeather, Volume 80, Issue 11, Page 387-394, November 2025.
Concentric gust fronts are formed when a thunderstorm’s downdraft reaches the ground and the outflow from the cold pool spreads uniformly outwards into the surrounding warm and humid air mass. Observational evidence presented here show the case of narrow‐band echoes forming a ring around a thunderstorm.

First reported case of thunderstorm asthma in Israel [PDF]

open access: yesNatural Hazards and Earth System Sciences, 2019
We report on the first recorded case of thunderstorm asthma in Israel, which occurred during an exceptionally strong eastern Mediterranean multicell thunderstorm on 25 October 2015. The storms were accompanied by intensive lightning activity, severe hail,

The Bayesian sinking in Porticello: a predictable convective windstorm?

open access: yesWeather, Volume 80, Issue 11, Page 365-373, November 2025.
The meteorological phenomenon that led to the Bayesian yacht sinking in Sicily at 0206 utc on 19 August 2024 is here investigated. A thunderstorm occurred during the sinking, but uncertainties exist regarding whether a waterspout or a downburst affected the ship. An in‐depth analysis of available observations highlighted that the ship was likely struck

Influence of Convectively Driven Flows in the Course of a Large Fire in Portugal: The Case of Pedrógão Grande

open access: yesAtmosphere, 2022
The influence of a mesoscale convective system (MCS) in the evolution of two wildfires that started during the afternoon of 17 June 2017 in Pedrógão Grande, Central Portugal is discussed and analysed using weather radar data, weather stations, video ...
