IDLB: An SDN‐Based Load‐Balancing Routing Protocol for Autonomous Satellite Constellation Networks

open access: yesInternational Journal of Satellite Communications and Networking, Volume 44, Issue 2, Page 109-127, March/April 2026.
ABSTRACT Routing in satellite constellation networks with intersatellite links has become an important aspect to enable broadband Internet access and to integrate into terrestrial networks. However, their dynamic characteristics and large physical size require specifically tailored solutions.

Downlink coverage probability in MIMO HetNets [PDF]

open access: yes2012 Conference Record of the Forty Sixth Asilomar Conference on Signals, Systems and Computers (ASILOMAR), 2012
The growing popularity of small cells is driving cellular networks of yesterday towards heterogeneity and randomness. Soon, hundreds of unplanned user deployed femtocells and tens of operator managed picocells will coexist in a typical macrocell. One of the natural ways to model base station (BS) locations in such heterogeneous cellular networks, or ...

Contribution of non‐orthogonal multiple access signalling to practical multibeam satellite deployments

open access: yesInternational Journal of Satellite Communications and Networking, Volume 44, Issue 1, Page 73-88, January/February 2026.
The potential gains of NOMA were evaluated in a satellite system with heterogeneous receivers, after considering the use of specific DVB‐S2X MODCODs, along with the impact of non‐linearities. It was concluded that a judicious power allocation in NOMA, jointly optimized with the IBO of the PAs, can yield significant sum‐rate gains.

Evaluation of multi‐user multiple‐input multiple‐output digital beamforming algorithms in B5G/6G low Earth orbit satellite systems

open access: yesInternational Journal of Satellite Communications and Networking, Volume 44, Issue 1, Page 17-33, January/February 2026.
In this paper, we investigate the application of signal‐to‐leakage‐plus‐noise ratio (SLNR) beamforming to low Earth orbit non‐terrestrial networks. The SLNR criterion aims at maximizing the received desired signal power for each user while minimizing the overall interference power caused by each user to all other co‐channel receivers. We show that such

Mixer-Duplexer-Antenna Leaky-Wave System Based on Periodic Space-Time Modulation

open access: yes, 2016
We present a mixer-duplexer-antenna leaky-wave system based on periodic space-time modulation. This system operates as a full transceiver, where the upconversion and downconversion mixing operations are accomplished via space-time transitions, the ...

Time and phase alignment of distributed gateways: Theoretical analysis and experimental demonstration

open access: yesInternational Journal of Satellite Communications and Networking, Volume 44, Issue 1, Page 47-59, January/February 2026.
The performance limitation in multiple‐input multiple‐output (MIMO) feeder links due to time and phase misalignment of the ground stations is investigated. Time and phase distribution over optical fiber is considered as an approach to achieve the synchronization requirements.

Capacity of Coherent Laser Downlinks

open access: yesJournal of Lightwave Technology, 2014
Accurate knowledge of information data capacity between a spacecraft and optical ground stations is of utmost importance for assessing the feasibility of laser downlinks in future high bandwidth communication systems from space. For the additional cost and complexity of the downlink systems, there is a growing interest for the sensitivity and spectral ...

Multi-Cell Massive MIMO in LoS

open access: yes, 2018
We consider a multi-cell Massive MIMO system in a line-of-sight (LoS) propagation environment, for which each user is served by one base station, with no cooperation among the base stations.
