Stark Broadening of Carbon and Oxygen Lines in Hot DQ White Dwarf Stars: Recent Results and Applications [PDF]
White dwarf stars are traditionally found to have surface compositions made primarily of hydrogen or helium. However, a new family has recently been uncovered, the so-called hot DQ white dwarfs, which have surface compositions dominated by carbon and ...

We report timing and broadband spectral analysis of a Galactic X-ray source, CXOGBS J174517.0−321356 (J1745), with a 614 s periodicity. Chandra discovered the source in the direction of the Galactic Bulge.

There have been relatively few published long-duration, uninterrupted light curves of magnetic cataclysmic variable stars in which the accreting white dwarf’s rotational frequency is slightly desynchronized from the binary orbital frequency.

DQ white-dwarf stars with low C abundance: possible progenitors [PDF]
The present paper focuses on the evolution of hydrogen-deficient white dwarfs with the aim of exploring the consequences of different initial envelope structures on the carbon abundances expected in helium-rich, carbon-contaminated DQ white dwarfs. In particular, the evolutionary link between the DQs with low detected carbon abundances and the PG1159 ...

When the accreting white dwarf in a magnetic cataclysmic variable star (mCV) has a field strength in excess of 10 MG, it is expected to synchronize its rotational frequency to the binary orbit frequency, particularly at small binary separations, due to ...

Spin-Up and Magnetic Fields in DQ Her Stars [PDF]
ABSTRACTWe have carried out a detailed comparison of the spin-up behavior of the recently discovered faint long-period X-ray sources, using the accretion torque theory of Ghosh and Lamb. We confirm that these sources are degenerate dwarfs. We find that they have magnetic fields B ~ 1 x 106 G, an order of magnitude smaller than those of AM Her stars. On

Rapid Evolution of the White Dwarf Pulsar AR Scorpii
Analysis of AR Sco optical light curves spanning 9 yr shows a secular change in the relative amplitudes of the beat pulse pairs generated by the two magnetic poles of its rotating white dwarf.
