Analysis of drag reduction in wingtip devices

open access: yes, 2017
Given the importance of fuel reduction in the aeronautical industry, for both economic and environmental purposes, the last few years have seen the popularization of wingtip devices as a mean to increase aerodynamic efficiency. This work presents and studies several wingtip device geometries at different flight conditions, assessing the impact that a ...

Dead Matter, Living Machines: Repurposing Crustaceans' Abdomen Exoskeleton for Bio‐Hybrid Robots

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Crustacean exoskeletons, repurposed from food waste, are engineered into sustainable bending actuators combining biotic structure with synthetic control. The augmented exoskeletons achieve rapid and robust motion with lightweight body and can be used as part of robotic manipulators, grippers and swimmers.

Cytokine‐Engineered Chimeric Antigen Receptor‐T Cell Therapy: How to Balance the Efficacy and Toxicity

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Cytokine‐engineered CAR‐T cells represent a promising immunotherapy against malignancies due to direct tumor killing and potent immunity response. However, significant toxicities, including CRS and ICANS, have restricted clinical applications. How to keep the risk‐benefit balance of the advanced therapy is of great importance for maximizing the benefit

Experimental analysis for peristalsis drag reduction technique

open access: yes, 2016
Most of the flows on our day basis are turbulent (airplane, cars, heat exchangers) so know its behavior has raised the interest of the industry. Compared to laminar flows turbulent ones have a higher skin-friction drag due to the Reynolds stresses. The aim of drag reduction techniques consists in inhibit turbulence and thus erase the effect of Reynold ...

Programmable Multifunctional Bistable Structures for Energy Transfer and Dissipation

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Utilizing the energy conversion characteristics of asymmetric bistable beams, this study develops a programmable multifunctional system composed of multiple bistable beams for energy transfer and dissipation. The high energy density enables the system to demonstrate potential in transient scenarios such as target delivery and shock absorption ...
