Pile Drag Load and Downdrag in a Liquefaction Event [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Geotechnical and Geoenvironmental Engineering, 2008
Sandy soils may undergo compression during liquefaction. A review of published design manuals, including the 2004 AASHTO LRFD Bridge Design Specifications, indicates that some recommendations for pile design may not represent the pile response in a manner consistent with the actual axial response of the pile during liquefaction.

Iterative Frequency-Domain Response of Floating Offshore Wind Turbines with Parametric Drag

open access: yesJournal of Marine Science and Engineering, 2018
Methods for coupled aero-hydro-servo-elastic time-domain simulations of Floating Offshore Wind Turbines (FOWTs) have been successfully developed. One of the present challenges is a realistic approximation of the viscous drag of the wetted members of the ...

Drag reduction in open channel flow by aeration and suspended load [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Hydraulic Research, 1994
In supercritical open channel flows, air is entrained at the free surface. Such air-water flows, called selfaerated flows, exhibit smaller friction losses than non-aerated flows. New data on drag reduction in selfaerated flows are presented. It is shown that the drag reduction process is linked with the presence of an air concentration boundary layer ...

Numerical Simulation on Inflation Process of Cruciform Drag Parachute [PDF]

open access: yesHangkong bingqi, 2021
In order to study the opening characteristics of the cruciform drag parachute, the ALE (Arbitrary Lagrange-Euler) fluid-solid coupling method is used to numerically simulate the inflation process of the cross drag parachute.

Static Performance Measurements and Model Predictions of Gas Foil Thrust Bearing with Curved Incline Geometry

open access: yesLubricants, 2023
Gas foil thrust bearings (GFTBs) have been successfully used to support the axial load of oil-free microturbomachinery with low drag friction due to the low viscosity of gas or air used as a bearing lubricant.

A novel method of determining the active drag profile in swimming via data manipulation of multiple tension force collection methods

open access: yesScientific Reports, 2023
A novel method aimed at evaluating the active drag profile during front-crawl swimming is proposed. Fourteen full trials were conducted with each trial using a stationary load cell set-up and a commercial resistance trainer to record the tension force in

Study on Reducing Towing Drag by Varying the Shape and Arrangement of Floats and Gears

open access: yesApplied Sciences, 2022
Many studies have been conducted with the aim of reducing fuel consumption by the fishing industry. We examined whether drag can be reduced by changing the arrangement of gears without requiring the development of new parts for the conventional float and
