Rare Events Prediction: Rogue Waves and Drags [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Rogue waves are rare events with unusually large wave amplitudes. In this thesis the multicanonical procedure is applied to the one-dimensional nonlinear Schrödinger equation in conjunction with a high order finite difference solution procedure to ...

Numerical Modeling of Photothermal Self‐Excited Composite Oscillators

open access: yesAdvanced Robotics Research, EarlyView.
We present a numerical framework for simulating photothermal self‐excited oscillations. The driving mechanism is elucidated by highlighting the roles of inertia and overshoot, as well as the phase lag between the thermal moment and the oscillation angle, which together construct the feedback loop between the system state and the environmental stimulus.

Naturaleza and citizenship in Modern Spain. From subject representation to the dawn of contemporary citizenship (17th-19th centuries)

open access: yesAlmanack
The Constitution of Cadiz of 1812 defines the profiles of the spanish subject and spanish citizen, to ones a clearly modern citizen, to others, a still immersed subject in the corporate world of the Ancient Regime.

A Soft Robotic Fish With a Dielectric Elastomer Actuator Body and Negative Stiffness Spine

open access: yesAdvanced Robotics Research, EarlyView.
This work introduces a bio‐mimetic soft robotic fish driven by fiber‐reinforced dielectric elastomer actuators integrated as its body. By prestretching this active skin against a flexible spine, a negative stiffness system is created, enabling large‐amplitude bending.

Open Media Scholarship: The Case for Open Access in Media Studies

open access: yesInternational Journal of Communication, 2016
This commentary, after outlining the broader rationale for open access in scholarly publishing, makes three arguments to support the claim that media and communication scholars should be at the forefront of the open access movement: (1) The topics that ...

Modular, Textile‐Based Soft Robotic Grippers for Agricultural Produce Handling

open access: yesAdvanced Robotics Research, EarlyView.
This article introduces textile‐based pneumatic grippers that transform simple textiles into robust bending actuators. Detailed experiments uncover how cut geometry and fabric selection shape performance. Successful handling of fragile agricultural items showcases the potential of textile robotics for safe, scalable automation in food processing and ...

MicroRoboScope: A Portable and Integrated Mechatronic Platform for Magnetic and Acoustic Microrobotic Experimentation

open access: yesAdvanced Robotics Research, EarlyView.
This work presents the MicroRoboScope, a highly integrated, compact, and portable microrobotic experimentation platform combining electromagnetic and acoustic actuation with real‐time visual feedback into a single, end‐to‐end device. The system enables closed‐loop control and tracking algorithm experimentation within an accessible and unified hardware ...

Summary of predicted mean ±SE wing-end spreads (m) and drags (kgf) and subsequent estimated fuel rates and intensities for the five trawl designs tested in experiments 1 (Lake Wooloweyah) and 2 (Clarence River).

open access: yes, 2014
Mean predicted drags were derived with a centred value of speed across the ground and with zero current.Dissimilar superscript letters for wing-end spread and drag within experiments indicate significant differences detected in false-discovery-rate ...

Intelligent Sky Guardians (InSkyGuard): An Aerial Robotic Swarm for Autonomous Detection and Entrapment of Rogue Multirotors

open access: yesAdvanced Robotics Research, EarlyView.
Intelligent Sky Guardians (InSkyGuard) is introduced as a four‐drone swarm that autonomously detects, tracks, and safely captures rogue drones using a coordinated net system. Computer vision and leader–follower control architecture enable synchronized enclosure, while integrated failsafes enhance system reliability. Validated through closed‐environment
