The Birth of a Style: Henry Hobson Richardson and the Competition Drawings for Trinity Church, Boston

The competition drawings for Trinity Church have been considered lost. Their recent discovery and their analysis reveal that Richardson's development of the Romanesque style did not come about through repudiation of his French training. His initial sketch was similar to esquisses in competitions at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts.
